About The Position

THE RESIDENTIAL SECURITY AGENT MAINTAINS THE SAFETY AND SECURITY OF THE RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY BY MONITORING THE AREA, CONTROLLING ACCESS, RESPONDING TO INCIDENTS, AND ASSISTING RESIDENTS AND VISITORS WHILE ENFORCING COMMUNITY RULES AND REPORTING SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY.

Requirements

  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be a Paraprofessional, Associate Professional, or Qualified Professional.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • At least 21 years old.
  • Able to read, write, understand, and follow directions.
  • Experience working in a human services field, preferably in mental health, substance abuse, or residential settings.
  • Must obtain IAHSS Basic Certification for Healthcare Security Officers within 90 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in human services preferred.
  • Preferred: Experience as a Residential Support Specialist or certification as a North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist (NCCPSS), which requires lived experience in recovery from serious mental illness and/or substance use disorder (at least 1 year in sustained recovery), completion of an approved 40-50 hour training course, 3 hours of ethics training, and additional 20 hours of related training.

Responsibilities

  • Provide unarmed security patrols, monitor facility access, and conduct risk assessments to identify and mitigate potential safety hazards, in line with IAHSS Basic Training guidelines (e.g., defining security's role in healthcare, effective communication, patrol techniques, and emergency preparedness).
  • Work directly with clients (individually or in groups) in residential settings to address functional deficits in domains such as vocational, educational, personal care, domestic, psychosocial, communication, problem-solving, and adaptive skills.
  • Implement preventive, developmental, and therapeutic interventions, including de-escalation techniques, crisis intervention, and use of force only as a last resort per IAHSS standards.
  • Use psycho-educational strategies, recovery interventions, and, if certified as a NC Peer Support Specialist, share personal recovery experiences to build rapport, model hope, and facilitate self-directed recovery.
  • Monitor and document vital signs, medications, and client behaviors as ordered by medical staff; coordinate with pharmacies and primary physicians as needed.
  • Assist with daily living activities, including meal preparation, shopping, housekeeping, maintenance, and transportation to appointments, outings, or community resources.
  • Support intake/tenant leasing processes, coordinate repairs or emergency maintenance, and ensure facility compliance with safety and security protocols.
  • Observe, document, and report incidents effectively in written and verbal forms, including security reports per IAHSS guidelines (e.g., accurate incident documentation and chain of custody).
  • Participate in crisis interventions, team meetings, and service planning, providing input on person-centered plans (PCPs) and clinical orders.
  • Link clients to community resources, natural supports, and benefits; assist with skill-building for self-advocacy and independent living.
  • Maintain client confidentiality per HIPAA regulations and complete timely, accurate documentation of services, interventions, and activities in accordance with Southeastern Integrated Care (SEIC) standards.
  • Promote workplace violence prevention and mitigation, drawing from IAHSS topics such as identifying risks, managing difficult customers, and emergency management.
  • Other duties as assigned, including facilitating peer-led groups or activities if qualified as a NC Peer Support Specialist.
  • Ensure smooth facility operations during assigned shifts, including security rounds, access control, and monitoring for unauthorized persons or activities.
  • Inform clients about benefits, community resources, and services; assist in obtaining them while modeling recovery principles.
  • Consult with treatment staff, including sharing observations from a security and support perspective.
  • Facilitate predetermined activities, such as recovery groups, skill-building sessions, or secure outings.
  • Work varied shifts as necessary, including nights and weekends, to provide 24/7 coverage.
  • Maintain confidentiality of SEIC and clients served.
  • Respond to emergencies, including medical, behavioral, or security incidents, using IAHSS-trained techniques for de-escalation and safe resolution.
  • Available to collaborate with clients at least 5 days per week.
  • Document services per Medicaid and SEIC standards, including purpose, interventions, time spent, effectiveness, and provider signature.
  • Ability to read medical records, write service notes, and present information effectively.
  • Proficiency in unarmed security techniques, including observation, reporting, and safe intervention.
  • Strong psycho-educational and daily/community integration skills.
  • Proficiency in family/caregiver training, consultation, and adaptive skill training across functional domains (vocational, educational, personal care, domestic, social, communication, leisure, problem-solving).
  • Expertise in behavior management, crisis intervention, de-escalation, and anticipatory skills per IAHSS guidelines.
  • Relational and supportive skills, including mentoring, anger management, symptom management, and wellness evaluation.
  • Ability to implement person-centered plans, provide input on PCPs, and link clients to diverse resources (natural, community, and paid supports).
  • Knowledge of healthcare security topics from IAHSS Basic Training, such as patrol procedures, report writing, customer service in healthcare, risk identification, and emergency response.
  • If certified as a NC Peer Support Specialist: Skills in using lived experience to facilitate recovery, teach problem-solving, engage in self-directed recovery strategies, and recognize signs/symptoms of mental illness or substance use.
  • Familiarity with local community resources and ability to work collaboratively with treatment teams.
