About The Position

The English for College program serves Wisconsin ninth-twelfth grade students who are learning English as a second language. As a Residence Peer Mentor, you will live in the residence hall during the 2-week summer session with approximately 16 high school students and lead recreational activities after class and assist the rest of the staff to meet the goals of the program. This position requires working nights and weekends.

Requirements

  • Cultural sensitivity and awareness of the needs of students from diverse backgrounds, including English language learners
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the ability to take direction and collaborate effectively in a team environment
  • Sophomore-level students or higher & continued enrollment at UWSP
  • Minimum 2.25 cumulative GPA

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of residence hall policy/experience enforcing policy
  • Knowledge/experience directing team sports and outdoor recreation
  • Certification in first aid, CPR, and life saving
  • Knowledge of a language other than English is helpful
  • Wisconsin driver’s license and a good driving record
  • Major in Education or English as a Second Language (ESL)

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a mentor and resource to participants by supporting their social and personal development.
  • Supervise and escort students during classes, meals, activities, residence hall living, and field trips.
  • Monitor study sessions, provide tutoring, and meet regularly with students to offer guidance and feedback.
  • Encourage participation in program activities while modeling positive leadership and enforcing program rules and policies.
  • Provide transportation as needed, support the USDA Summer Food Service Program, ensure the proper return of supplies and equipment, and complete other assigned duties.
  • Residence Peer Mentors will lead the students in activities Monday – Friday from 3:00PM until 10PM, and on weekends.
  • They will supervise students overnight and at mealtimes.
  • During class hours, the Residence Peer Mentors may occasionally run errands, attend Residence Peer Mentor meetings, and care for a student who becomes ill.

Benefits

  • The Residence Peer Mentor will be paid $1,500 and will receive full room and board for the two-week residential program.
