About The Position

The Residential Helper is responsible for assisting the refuse truck driver on designated routes to collect garbage, yard waste, and recycling. This role emphasizes customer service and safety while performing various manual tasks related to waste collection and disposal.

Requirements

• Ability to read, write, and comprehend reports for daily assignments.
• Physically able to push or pull independently 50 pounds between 800 and 1000 times a day.
• Physically able to lift independently 50 pounds from the ground to waist height between 800 and 1000 times a day.
• Physically able to get up and down from the cab of a commercial motor vehicle between 800 and 1000 times a day.
• Physically able to bend at the waist and knees between 800 and 1000 times a day.
• Physically able to work 8 to 12 hours in extreme weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Assist the refuse truck driver on pre-assigned and special routes to pick up garbage, yard waste, or recycling.
• Manually pick up solid waste and place it in the back of a rear load garbage truck.
• Lift and carry trash bags, bulk items, and containers to the truck for disposal.
• Climb onto and off of the rear truck step to load refuse, waste, and carts.
• Operate the packing mechanism to compact waste into the truck.
• Provide courteous and efficient customer service during refuse operations.
• Ensure proper pick up and transfer of garbage and recyclables at residences.
• Answer questions from residents and direct them to Customer Service or appropriate offices.
• Comply with ANSI, OSHA, and company safety policies.
• Assist the driver in safely backing up the truck by directing from the ground.
• Clean behind the compactor blade and maintain cleanliness of the truck and hopper.
• Report safety or customer service issues to the driver and supervisor immediately.
• Perform clean-up of scattered refuse and accidental waste spills.
• Assist other routes as needed to complete daily work.
• Attend and participate in corporation-sponsored training courses.
