About The Position

BLO seeks a talented and engaging Resident Teaching Artist to schedule, plan, and facilitate educational opera and music workshops, residencies, and school vacation programs throughout the 2025/2026 season and upcoming seasons.

Requirements

  • The successful candidate will have a strong artistic and musical background, a proven record of program facilitation with students of all ages and backgrounds, excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ideal candidates will have a minimum of 3 – 5 years teaching experience, a Bachelor’s or Graduate Degree in Education, Music, Performing Arts, or related field, and a background/knowledge in opera, classical music, or theatre arts.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Must have availability to work during school hours, as well as occasional evenings and weekends; willingness to travel to schools in the Boston area; strong oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; ability to facilitate group decision-making; ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; strong attention to detail.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a CORI check; candidates with a drivers’ license preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Piano proficiency and teaching experience with diverse age groups and educational settings are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Report to Director of Learning and work closely with the Artistic and Community Programs staff in the planning and implementation of youth education programs with public and private schools and community and cultural institutions in the city of Boston.
  • Maintain a regular schedule of administrative hours during which they will coordinate the BLO workshop and residency schedule, prepare classroom materials and lesson plans, strategize and implement recruitment and promotional practices for all youth education programs.
  • Develop and implement engaging curriculum for students in grades K-12 that applies to Common Core and Arts Curriculum standards.
  • Participate in Professional Development workshops in the Music! Words! Opera! program as arranged by BLO, and adapt curriculum for BLO workshops and residencies. Residencies include assisting students in the creation of their own classroom operas.
  • Co-facilitate and co-plan program activities and repertoire with co-teachers at partnering institutions.
