About The Position

The primary responsibility of the Resident Counselor is to provide direct support and skill building to people diagnosed with mental illness at the Enriched Living Center, a 52-bed OMH-certified residence.

Requirements

• High school diploma (or equivalent), preferably with one year of experience with the severely and persistently mentally ill population.
• Compassionate, caring demeanor.
• Ability to remain calm under pressure.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Ability to set appropriate boundaries with residents.
• Strong oral communication skills.
• Ability to work as a team player.
• Agreement with Rescue Mission of Utica’s Mission Statement.
• Clean/valid NYS Driver’s License preferred.

Responsibilities

• Interact with the residents as frequently as possible in order to build trust and rapport.
• Promote, model and teach acceptable social behaviors to the residents.
• Monitor the security camera system to maintain a safe environment.
• Teach the residents with: personal hygiene, laundering, and social skills.
• Prompt and assist residents to maintain the cleanliness of their rooms.
• Assist in housekeeping duties, and oversee the cleaning of residents’ rooms, as necessary.
• Monitor medications with the residents: supervise the self-administration of medications by residents.
• Perform hourly rounds of the building by checking doors, windows, alarms, and looking for liquid spills, etc.
