About The Position

To further the mission of the camp through the planning and delivery of a programs that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ ages and abilities. Assist in the care and maintenance of the specific program and related equipment. Specifically, in the aquatics program this individual maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • AGE: Minimum age of 18.
  • MANDATORY CERTIFICATIONS: Current YMCA Lifeguarding, American Safety & Health Institute or American Red Cross or American Heart Association BLS for the Professional Rescuer, Standard/Community First Aid certifications and Emergency Oxygen Administration or able to pass Lifeguard Training Certification Course during 1st week of training.
  • PROVISIONAL EXCEPTION: Candidate may be hired in advance of obtaining the above certifications provided they will be registered into a YMCA Lifeguard V7 course within 30 days of hire, have participated in an interview, and passed the pre-employment skills assessment. Lifeguarding shifts may be scheduled only after certifications are in-hand and approved in SafetyZone. Certified American Red Cross Lifeguards must obtain YMCA Lifeguarding Certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Ability to perform the following:
  • Tread water for 2 minutes (legs only)
  • Swim 250 yards of front crawl
  • Swim 50 yards of each: Front crawl with the head up Breaststroke Breaststroke with the head up Elementary backstroke kick with hands on the chest
  • Perform a feet-first surface-dive in 8 to 10 feet of water (if branch facility accommodates). Then swim underwater for 15 feet.
  • Starting in the shallow end of the water, sprint for a distance of approximately 60 feet then perform an arm-over-arm surface dive in 8 to 10 feet (if branch facility accommodates). Pick up an object (dive ring) from the bottom of pool, surface and tread water for at least one minute with legs only, replace the object back to the bottom of the pool where it was found.
  • Swim the remaining length to end of pool and hoist yourself out of water. Immediately begin CPR on an adult mannequin for 2 minutes, stand and listen to directions from instructor.
  • Sit for extended periods of time in an elevated chair. Must remain alert and focused on the entire zone of responsibility for extended periods of time, even under conditions of high heat and humidity, with no lapses in consciousness.
  • Move safely to various locations, including entering and exiting an elevated chair, while scanning the zone of responsibility.
  • Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals. Must understand that significant background noise exists in all indoor and outdoor aquatic environments.
  • Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  • Communicate with others immediately when responding to an incident or an emergency. Must be able to communicate verbally, including projecting their voice across distances; communicate swiftly and clearly with emergency personnel over the telephone and or in person; and effectively give and receive directions.
  • Perform all rescue, resuscitation, and survival skills.
  • Act swiftly in an emergency and take action even when unsure whether a person is really in danger.
  • You must have the physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Lifeguards under the age of 18 must always work alongside an on-duty Lifeguard over the age of 18.
  • Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid.
  • Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Requirements for eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate equipment.
  • Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/program and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat.

  • RELATED EXPERIENCE: 1-2 years lifeguard experience preferred.
  • SPECIALIZED SKILLS: Ability to maintain required certification; Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • CAMP PROGRAM AREA QUALIFICATIONS Adventure: Reptile Handling & Caring, Outdoor Survival Skills, Hiking & Exploring, Outdoor/ Open Fire Cooking, Fitness, Astronomy, Orienteering
  • Aquatics: pool & lake lifeguards - Candidates must have current lifeguard certification or must obtain lifeguard certification prior or during staff training (must show very strong swimming skills and be able to demonstrate all strokes efficiently)
  • Arts & Crafts: General Arts and Crafts, Drama/Theater, Drumming/Musicians, Sewing, Jewelry Making, Musi, Guitar Lessons
  • Athletics: Soccer, Archery, Yoga, Dance, Zumba, Aerobics, Mountain Biking, Ball Hockey, Badminton, Pickleball
  • Challenge Course: Candidates should have former experience and/ or certifications in in High Ropes, Low Ropes, Teambuilding, Zip Lines, Climbing Tower
  • Equestrian: must have a minimum of 2-3 years experience riding and working with horses

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate abilities of campers.
  • Deliver progressive activities.
  • Teach and monitor proper use of equipment.
  • Assist in the evaluation of the success of the program.
  • Develop and deliver a program that is appropriate for the ages and abilities of the campers.
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Maintain the program equipment
  • Conduct daily checks of area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
  • Assist in packing all materials and supplies on a daily basis as well as at the end of the season.
  • Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures.
  • Reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Plays an active role in continuing to identify ways to improve safety standards.
  • Maintains effective, positive relationships with members, participants and other staff.
  • Continuously monitors program area for hazardous or unsafe conditions.
  • Immediately reports all hazardous or unsafe conditions to management and takes appropriate action.
  • Uses problem solving skills to make quick decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise, and recognize the potential for danger or injury.
  • Participate as a member of the camp staff team
  • Assist in the day to day upholding of camp and dining hall procedures
  • Assist in maintaining housekeeping standards and assigned duties
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning, and leading those as assigned.
  • Conduct safety and Inspection of the bus or assigned vehicle in operation daily.
  • Assist and deliver safe driving practices that are appropriate for the ages and abilities of the campers.
  • Report to program area at least 15 minutes before program to get equipment ready.
  • Check that radio is turned on in a moderate volume

  • Take out trash from dining hall and replace it with new liners.
  • Conduct daily safety and housekeeping checks as assigned by the director or Housekeeping Supervisor
  • Complete daily housekeeping duties, log inspections and ensure chemicals or cleaning supplies are properly stored and/or replenished.
  • Turn in Maintenance request form for any items missing, broken, in need of repair or safety concerns
  • Provide continuous, uninterrupted scanning of pool and aquatic area.
  • Follow Minimum Standards of Safety for Aquatic Activities 7.301.
  • Understand and consistently enforce safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  • Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Use problem solving skills to make quick decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise, and recognize the potential for danger or injury.
  • Maintain effective, positive relationships with members, participants and other staff.
  • Review all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Complete related reports as required.
  • Maintain accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
  • Play an active role in continuing to identify ways to improve safety standards.
  • Continuously monitor aquatic areas for hazardous or unsafe conditions.
  • Immediately report all hazardous or unsafe conditions to management and take appropriate action.
  • Successfully complete and pass periodic aquatic safety assessments.
  • Return radio and charger, keys, staff name tag, to the office
  • Ensure all your worked hours are accurately recorded AND self-approved in Paycom
  • Attend staff meetings and training as required.
  • Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting and risk management.
