About The Position

The Resident Assistant (RA) fosters a strong sense of community among residents through communication, programming, and active engagement. RA's contribute to an environment that supports personal, social, cultural, intellectual, and artistic growth. RA's are expected to uphold high standards of moral and ethical conduct. Beyond monitoring behavior, they help residents achieve their academic and artistic potential and develop responsibility for the shared community. The typical RA term of appointment is one full academic year (consecutive Fall and Spring semesters), including pre-semester trainings. All RA's are required to be on campus and fully participate in all training and operational activities which commence prior to the opening of the residence halls for both fall and spring semesters. RAs are expected to remain in residence until 48 hours after halls close at Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, Spring Break and May Commencement. All RAs are expected to leave the residence halls for break periods unless selected to serve as a Break or Summer RA. RAs are expected to support, participate and encourage student participation in College and Residential Life initiatives such as Orientation, Preview Days, Accepted Student Days, Hallowed Halls, Family Weekend, RA selection process, and Housing Selection/Lottery. Requirements

Must be a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in a degree-granting program at Ringling College.
Must resolve any academic or financial issues before the start of RA duties (2 weeks before Fall start, 1 week before Spring start).
Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher at the start of employment. For RAs hired for Fall , GPA is verified 30 days before training; for those starting in Spring or mid-year, GPA is verified 14 days before the position begins.
Experience living in a residential academic community (e.g., college, university, or boarding school) for at least two semesters. First-year students are eligible if they will complete their second semester before the position starts.
Free from current student conduct sanctions and have resolved pending conduct charges (14 days before August start, 7 days before other start dates).
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
Creative, trustworthy, and willing to take on additional responsibilities.
Proficiency in basic office and computer applications.
Positive attitude and professional demeanor.

Responsibilities

COMMUNITY BUILDING Assist residents in understanding their rights and responsibilities through floor meetings and conversations.
Regularly check in with residents individually and in groups to access their needs.
Support residents with personal, social, financial or academic concerns, refers to appropriate personnel when needed.
Serve as positive role model by demonstrating academic engagement, artistic success, good study habits and inclusive behavior.
INCIDENT RESPONSE Understand and follow all College policies in the Student Handbook, as well as national, state, and local laws.
Educate residents about policies and assist in enforcing them.
Respond to emergencies promptly and refer situations to professional staff as needed.
Participate in emergency response efforts, including evacuations on campus and if needed, at designated shelters.
Document and communicate incidents accurately and in a timely manner.
Mediate room, suite, and community conflicts.
Address and report any behavior that is or could be perceived as discriminatory or offensive.
Report all sexual misconduct or relationship violence as a Responsible Employee to the Title IX coordinator or deputy coordinator.
RESIDENCE HALL ON-DUTY COVERAGE Rotate coverage with other area staff as part of the on-duty system.
Carry the college-issued cell phone during duty hours and respond to calls promptly.
Communicate any duty changes to your supervisor in advance.
Provide coverage during academic and administrative holidays, as well as semester breaks.
ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS Supports the front desk and attends weekly staff and individual supervision meetings.
Perform ongoing administrative duties, including occupancy management, health and safety inspections, facilities maintenance, resident lock-out service, programming within the residence halls.
Other duties as assigned.
TRAINING FUNCTIONS Attend in person and actively participate in Fall and Spring RA Training.
Participate in in RA in-service training sessions throughout each semester.
The RA position is a student worker role, with an average of 20 hours per week during the academic year; additional hours may be required during peak times (e.g., move-in/out, special events, or significant hall/campus incidents).
Following official academic commitments, the RA position is the primary responsibility and takes precedence over other employment or student leadership roles; approval from a supervisor is required before accepting other employment.
Follow Florida State Laws and College/Residence Life policies regarding alcohol, controlled substances, and community standards; violations may result in termination.
RAs are designated as Title IX Responsible Employees and Clery Act Campus Security Authorities and must fulfill all reporting requirements.
Complete a criminal background check.
Placement into residential communities is determined by professional staff based on community needs; duties may vary by area.
RAs may be assigned additional responsibilities as determined by professional Residence Life staff.
