About The Position

The Resident Assistant - Summer (RA) is a student leader and a vital member of the Residential Living team. This position provides support to summer interns, Washburn University students, visiting camps, and conference guests. Summer Resident Assistants play a key role in creating a welcoming and supportive residential experience through hospitality, community development, and administrative support. Success in this role requires adaptability, strong interpersonal communication, critical thinking, and excellent time management. Requirements

  • Must be a current RA or hired as an RA for the upcoming academic year.
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75.
  • Be in good standing with the University and Residential Living policies.
  • Available to work 15-20 hours per week; must maintain presence in your residence hall for the 15-20 hours per week.
  • Students with clinicals, internships, practicums, or student teaching requiring more than 20 hours/week will not be eligible.
  • Understanding of FERPA and Confidentiality.
  • Washburn University Resources of Support.
  • Residential Living Policies and an understanding of the Code of Conduct.
  • Any outside commitments over 15 hours/week (excluding academics) must be approved by a supervisor.
  • Must attend all summer training sessions, weekly meetings, and provide coverage on weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Foster a sense of belonging through intentional interactions and event implementation.
  • Respond promptly to resident and guest questions or concerns.
  • Provide accurate referrals to campus resources.
  • Educate and enforce University and Residential Living policies.
  • Create welcoming environments through bulletin boards, door decorations, programs, and daily engagement.
  • Communicate resident or guest concerns (e.g., safety, conduct, or well-being) to supervisors.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to respond to policy violations, emergency situations, and facilities concerns.
  • Support emergency and crisis response efforts, including inclement weather management and after-hours lockouts.
  • Assist with Spring semester hall closing tasks.
  • Prepare for an support guest check-in/check-out for summer conferences.
  • Conduct room inspections and assist with Room Condition Reports.
  • Collaborate with Desk Assistants, Office Coordinators, facilities staff, and professional staff to build strong community engagement.
  • Attend all mandatory summer training, weekly staff meetings, and regular 1:1 meetings with your supervisor.
  • Fulfill additional duties as assigned.
