About The Position

The Resident Artist Intern collaborates with arts administrators and educators to enhance the artistic and educational experiences of college students in technical, production, and performing arts who are pursuing careers in the entertainment industry. This role is critical to the success of Dr. Phillips Center’s summer programs and productions, with interns serving in multiple capacities including teaching, performance, creative team support, production, and administration. Through an experiential learning model, Resident Artist Interns receive training, workshops, and mentorship that deepen their artistry and skills in curriculum and content development, developmental theory, classroom management, production processes, and performance. Interns work side-by-side with the Dr. Phillips Center Education team, fellow teaching artists, Broadway professionals, and creative team members in a supportive learning environment dedicated to achieving daily program goals.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment or recent graduation from an undergraduate or graduate musical theatre, performance, or related arts degree program required.
  • Prior teaching experience and demonstrated experience working with children required.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred degree tracks include BFA, BA, BM, MFA, MEd, or MA with a concentration in arts education or performance.

Responsibilities

  • Teach assigned classes within the daily rotation for the School of the Arts Summer Program at Dr. Phillips Center, serving students ages 6–18.
  • Assist design and implement developmentally appropriate syllabi and lesson plans for assigned summer camp weeks, including two Musical Theatre-focused weeks.
  • Support the Take It From The Top Broadway Week in collaboration with Paul Canaan and additional Broadway artists.
  • Perform as a cast member or serve on the production crew for the summer production, Next to Normal.
  • Serve as a member of the creative team for the Florida Musical Theatre Intensive youth production, West Side Story, in roles such as Assistant Director, Assistant Music Director, Assistant Choreographer, Stage Manager, and/or other production elements assigned.
  • Assist with production and rehearsal elements assigned.
  • Attend all required Dr Phillips Center intern trainings, meetings, professional development sessions, and select special events.
  • Prepare and submit required documentation, including lesson plans, assessments, rehearsal reports, production materials, attendance records, and time sheets.
  • Coordinate, prepare, and manage materials, equipment, and supplies necessary for classes and rehearsals.
  • Be present for all scheduled rehearsals, technical rehearsals, and production performances.
  • Follow and support all Dr. Phillips Center operational policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Demonstrate and uphold the organization’s core values while fully integrating into the Dr Phillip Center’s culture.
  • Maintain professional, positive working relationships with colleagues, partners, students, parents, and other departments.
  • Remain calm and solution-oriented in fast-paced, high-pressure environments.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service while interacting with diverse internal and external stakeholders, exercising patience, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
