About the position

The Residency Adviser position at the University of Washington involves determining student residency classification for tuition purposes and advising students on residency requirements and processes. The role requires interpretation of Washington State statutes and codes, and the application of these to individual student situations. The adviser will work closely with the Residency Team Manager and other team members to facilitate residency determinations and provide guidance to students and prospective students regarding residency-related issues. This position is crucial for ensuring that students understand their residency status, which is essential for their enrollment and tuition assessment.

Responsibilities

  • Advise and counsel current and prospective students regarding Washington residency requirements and processes via email and Zoom.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for special residency populations, such as UW Medical School applicants and non-U.S. citizens.
  • Interpret individual situations regarding residency requirements and suggest courses of action based on research of state statutes and university policy.
  • Act as a residency liaison between the Seattle, Bothell, and Tacoma campuses, training staff on residency policy.
  • Present Residency Office policies at in-person events and participate in online meetings of residency professionals.
  • Review residency questionnaire applications and documentation to determine residency qualification.
  • Compose and send detailed letters of explanation for denied residency requests.
  • Maintain records regarding residency change requests and stay current on Washington residency laws.
  • Coordinate application processing for residency questionnaires and affidavits, including special tuition exemptions and waivers.
  • Assist with the implementation of a new online application/filing system and coordinate with the Residency Team on website updates.
  • Maintain statistical information on residency applications and report to internal and external agencies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Two years' related experience in advising individuals on complex processes and making decisions in line with state and/or federal laws.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with educational computer programs such as Slate, MyGrad, CollegeNet, SDB, EARS, etc.
  • Experience with systems implementation.
  • Interest in online research.
