About The Position

CFH is seeking a Residence Worker/Food Service Worker for its Shelter. The Shelter operates under contract with the New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) and, as a contract agency, has reporting responsibilities to DHS and is subject to inspections and audits by DHS, New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance and the Coalition for the Homeless of New York City. Under the direct supervision by the Shelter Director or designee. Individuals in this position also must have crucial customer service and effective communication skills.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or GED equivalent (required).
  • Must have a valid NYC DOHMH Food protection Certificate or other NYC DOHMH approved food handling certificate (or willingness to take course).
  • Excellent communication skills
  • AED/CPR Certification (or willingness to take course).
  • Some Computer skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Homelessness or special needs population preferred.

Responsibilities

  • This position is an essential part of the facility safety team. Maintain the safety and security of all residents in the facility through staff-specific posts throughout the building. Help with the necessary rounds of the facility. Helps with enforcing facility rules and regulations for clients and communicating to supervisory personnel all incidents, situations or conditions which might affect the safety and security of clients and staff or the orderly operation of the facility.
  • Provide prompt and effective responses to client emergencies, including appropriate and effective response to physical or verbal altercations between clients, effective interventions in medical emergencies (which may include performing CPR or asking for 911 to be called). Any occurrence should be to report to the Security team and the Supervisor on duty at once.
  • Administer operational procedures to ensure compliance with government regulations. These include verifying arrival and departure of clients from the premises, keeping an active client/bed count in the facility (getting signatures and reporting clients who are known to be absent from the facility and violations curfew. Reporting incident to supervisors and Security and answering the phone when asked.
  • Distribute and control the inventory of client supplies, including the distribution of meals on all shifts.
  • Prepare, heat and serve meals.
  • Ensures that food services meet health regulations and safety codes.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the dining area: including cleaning up after all meals.
  • Understands weights and measures as it relates to portion control.
  • Maintain the service and preparation areas in a clean and organized manner.
  • Receive all incoming food deliveries. Keep the cafeteria and kitchen clean.
  • Report or order of all food when the inventory is low. Attend on-going training for all food service staff, this includes required training set forth by DOH and DHS.
  • Participate in training and staff-development activities to gain necessary skills for successful job performance.
  • Register new clients, orient them to the facility, and ensure that all mandated documentation is completed, signed by both staff and residents.
  • Facilitate vacancy control when requested by the Shift Supervisor to ensure clients are un-bedded and bedded appropriately.
  • Communicate effectively with other staff within an interdisciplinary context to contribute to the achievement of facility goals and objectives.
  • Perform hourly facility runs to:
  • Monitor and help to ensure that resident areas to being kept clean always.
  • Help in the facility to ensure that all locations of the building are inspected on every shift.
  • Monitor recreational rooms, laundry rooms and cafeteria to ensure all residents are adhering to the facility rules and regulations.
  • Help with medication calls and reminder to the residents as necessary and in compliance with all rules and regulations.
  • Perform daily pack ups and logging of the property belonging to AWOL residents (ensure that the bags are inventoried, labeled and numbered).
  • Store and remove resident property from the client storage area when it is returned to the resident or discarded. Log all discards with the names and number of bags discarded and the date.
  • Maintain a clean and organized storage area.
  • Escort clients to appointments such as Public Assistance, Social Security, and Medical etc.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by supervisory staff.
