About the position

The Residence Director is a 12 month, live-in position. The Residence Director serves as an active and visible residence hall staff member that participates and facilitates student development, community development, leadership development, activity development, administration, policy enforcement, crisis management and staff development. The Residence Director is supervised by an Associate Director of Residential Life. Assignment is subject to review and renewal on an annual basis for no more than four consecutive years; a fifth year may be granted upon exemplary service to the department and approval of the Director of Residential Life.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises undergraduate Resident Assistants.
  • Assists with the recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation of undergraduate and graduate staff.
  • Attend (and lead as appropriate) various meetings (e. g. one-on-one meetings with Resident Assistants, meetings with supervisor, RA staff meetings, and professional staff meetings, etc.).
  • Promote and implement training sessions and in-services as well as ongoing staff development initiatives.
  • Community and Student Leadership Development. Build community utilizing the community development plan and activity model set forth by the department.
  • Directs staff in the creation of events and initiatives that encourage resident involvement and engage students with their growth and development.
  • Serves as a resource and referral agent for students' academic, identity, and social needs.
  • Supports and meets the needs of traditionally underrepresented students, including students of color, international students and GLBT students, and assists student staff to do the same.
  • Work collaboratively with security personnel to create a safe and secure community.
  • Responsible for interpreting and upholding the university's rules and regulations through upholding the Guiding Principles of Conduct in a proactive and educational manner.
  • Serve as a case resolution facilitator.
  • Handle crisis situations, such as mental health incidents, roommate conflicts, student conduct and staffing issues, including appropriate community response.
  • Provide duty responsibilities for approximately 1,300 residential students.
  • Oversee the administrative tasks related to inventory, damage, billing, maintenance, keys, fire safety, and building security.
  • Participate and lead departmental functions, projects, or committees/workgroups assigned, including but not limited to community development initiatives, housing operations management, staff selection and training, student discipline process, and student leadership advisement and development.
  • Participate in the Performance Management and Development Process by creating an annual professional development plan with the assistance of supervisor.
  • Represent the department as a member of university-wide committees/workgroups.
  • Participate in staff training and development opportunities offered by Residential Life and other campus departments.
  • Remain aware of new developments in the field of student development, bringing such information to the staff.
  • Maintain involvement at the regional and national level within professional development organizations, as well as attend local, regional, and national conferences.
  • Performs other such duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferred, with experience as a live-in staff member as an undergraduate or professional staff member is required.
  • Demonstrated experience and initiative with student and community development; supervision and staff training; advising student groups.
  • Creation and implementation of management systems and crisis intervention.
  • Able to work with diverse populations.
