About The Position

The voluntary Reserve Deputy Sheriff-Lateral (RDS-Lateral) position receives monetary compensation of $1.00 annually for the performance of their duties. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department - Reserve Forces Detail is a volunteer organization of individuals who supplement the Department's law enforcement manpower. Reserve Deputy Sheriffs undergo the same hiring standards as full-time Deputies and work alongside them in support of every aspect of the Department operations. After becoming field qualified, a Level 1 reserve deputy can work patrol alone or with a partner and has peace officer status.

Requirements

• Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
• A valid California class 'C' driver license is required
• Must have at least two years of continuous peace officer experience in a California P.O.S.T. certified law enforcement agency
• Must possess a current and valid California P.O.S.T. certificate or Proof of Eligibility (POE)
• Must have completed the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department academy within the last three years

Responsibilities

• Testify in court
• Make a forcible arrest
• Search for and handle evidence/contraband
• Use a firearm
• Drive a County vehicle
• Take action in response to public offenses
• Perform law enforcement administrative and operational duties
• Maintain current knowledge of policies and procedures
• Maintain all equipment and attend required training
• Respond to emergent situations
• Perform community-based policing
• Control, monitor, and supervise inmate conduct
• Search inmates and inspect housing units for contraband
• Transport inmates to hospitals as needed
• Conduct preliminary investigations of suspected criminal activity
• Patrol designated areas to enforce laws and prevent crime
• Conduct personnel background investigations
• Exercise technical supervision over other line personnel
• Conduct complex major investigations
