About The Position

The Daily Beast delivers award-winning original reporting and sharp opinion from big personalities in the arenas of politics, pop-culture, world news, and more. Fiercely independent and armed with irreverent intelligence, we now reach more than 20 million readers per month. We are based in New York and are an operating business of IAC. What we can offer you The Daily Beast is seeking a dependable, self-motivated, and inquisitive researcher-reporter to lead our research team full time in New York. The researcher will be responsible for aiding newsroom investigations journalism across a wide array of topics, including politics, U.S. news, technology, science and international news. Speed, diligence, and an enthusiasm for discovery are a must. Fluency with online and offline research tools is essential. The ideal candidate is a flexible, fast-moving news junkie who loves doing deep dives on topics in the news, finding hard-to-find people, and helping to expose corruption and malfeasance. Depending on the candidate, the job may also include the opportunity to report and write original stories.

Requirements

  • Strong research, writing and reporting skills
  • Proven skill as a narrative writer and story-teller
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, juggling multiple projects and deadlines
  • Willingness to collaborate with other reporters, editors, and media partners
  • Advanced training in online and offline research methods
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Fluency in social media, story promotion skills
  • A self-starter who can conceive and execute stories and investigations with impact
  • Ability to take initiative, receive constructive feedback, and work with minimal supervision
  • At least five years of newsroom experience
  • A voracious news diet and appetite for current affairs, pop culture and internet trends
  • Ideally based in New York City

Responsibilities

  • Work with senior editors to advance investigations across all verticals
  • Utilize Nexis, Dataminr, LinkedIn, social media platforms and internet search tools to advance news stories and investigations
  • Educate the newsroom on the latest research tricks and tools
  • Handle FOIA requests for verticals
  • Obtain public records, court papers, criminal histories, business filings, and other vital information for reporters and editors
  • Brainstorm best practices for tracking down hard-to-find people and facts, ferreting out real identities online, and tracking a person’s (often hidden) internet footprint
  • Use sources, documents, computer-assisted reporting, and other journalistic tools to develop, report, and write his or her own stories on these topics
  • Fact-check political, government, and corporate leaders on these issues of the day
  • Help edit, guide, mentor, and collaborate with other members of The Daily Beast staff
  • Adhere to the ethical code, policies and procedures of The Daily Beast
