About The Position
The University of Wisconsin-Madison Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) is a renowned research and development center recognized for its significant contributions to Antarctic meteorological observing and repository efforts. The center is particularly known for its Antarctic Automatic Weather Station (AWS) program and the Antarctic Meteorological Research and Data Center (AMRDC). The observations collected from the AWS program are unique and play a crucial role in meteorological research, weather forecasting, and educational initiatives. The successful candidate will join the AWS/AMRDC team, focusing on quality control of meteorological observations from the AWS network. This role involves not only the installation and maintenance of AWS in Antarctica but also the acquisition, ingestion, decoding, processing, quality control, and distribution of meteorological data. Quality control is essential to ensure that the observations are of high quality for various research applications. The candidate will also be responsible for monitoring and documenting the health of the AWS network and its instruments, collaborating with the AWS team to enhance quality control procedures, and assisting with reporting and publications. The position emphasizes educational outreach, and the candidate should have experience in engaging the public with scientific information across various platforms. This position is situated within the Antarctic Meteorological Research Center operational area, contributing to the United States Antarctic Program (USAP) under the auspices of the National Science Foundation.
