The Researcher II role initiates, conducts, and leads research activities to meet the organization’s and department’s strategic goals. The Researcher II leads the planning and implementation of research projects; works across the organization to provide research services to other AANP departments; and assists with Research Department administration to ensure project timeliness and quality. This position can be remote, hybrid, or in office. Our office locations are Austin, Texas National Headquarters and Washington D.C. Government Affairs (Arlington, Virginia).

Requirements

  • PhD in nursing, education, economics, statistics, public policy, psychology, sociology or related field required.
  • A master’s degree plus equivalent experience above the minimum experience requirement can be substituted for education on a year for year basis.
  • Five or more years of experience in health statistics or research/survey management and data analysis is required.
  • Requires skills in statistics; the design of surveys including sample surveys; analysis of data collected through complex sample designs; sampling theory including sampling, weighting and estimation.
  • Advanced computer competence involving a variety of software products is required, including those for word-processing, spreadsheet design and use, graphics (charts/tables), and data entry, as well as intermediate to advanced skills in Stata (data management and statistics syntax), and Microsoft Office 365.
  • Strong critical and analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to perform tasks with high level of accuracy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to perform all communication in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Strong initiative and ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritizing and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to work with others in a fast-paced, focused work environment.
  • Ability to collaborate with research, policy, practice, and education staff.
  • Good understanding of medical and nursing terminology.
  • Adapt research approaches based on evolving questions or constraints.
  • Apply judgment in ambiguous or incomplete data environments.
  • Ability to travel to, and staff, AANP conferences or events as assigned (less than 5% travel).

  • Knowledge of nurse practitioners or nursing is a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with the Vice President of Research to establish research goals and objectives based on the AANP/departmental strategic plan, the Research Agenda, and emerging priorities.
  • Conducts all aspects of survey research, including generating questions and protocol design, sampling, data collection, analysis, interpretation and reporting. Obtains Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval as necessary.
  • Contributes to other data collection and processing efforts, such as gathering licensure data to create national and state counts of nurse practitioners (NPs).
  • Prepares datasets for analysis including labeling, renaming, and recoding (e.g., data cleaning).
  • Conducts descriptive analyses and uses results to create reports, tables, graphs, and infographics.
  • May lead complex quantitative studies using designs such as regression discontinuity, propensity score matching, and instrumental variables.
  • Prepares, publishes, and presents data and statistics in a manner understandable to various audiences.
  • Works with the Communications & Marketing department to develop communications strategy for surveys and results dissemination.
  • May perform literature searches and summarize results to meet project, departmental or organizational needs, for example in annotated bibliographies.
  • Conducts environmental scans to identify trends, challenges and opportunities related to organizational research activities.
  • Generates abstracts, presentations, and posters for conferences and meetings.
  • Works with the federal and state teams to conduct policy evaluations and research studies using large publicly available datasets, which may include Medicare, National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses (NSSRN), National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) and National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS).
  • Monitors research inbox and responds to and manages member and non-member data requests.
  • Liaises with internal and external researchers regarding projects’ protocol, scope, budget and timeline.
  • Collaborates with external researchers on projects, as needed.
  • Represents the association at events as requested by the Vice President of Research, promoting AANP, the NP role and NP research.
  • Writes grant proposals.
  • Oversees the administration of research grants and other support for NP-focused research from sources such as foundations, government agencies, and industry.
  • May administer research department programs (e.g., data collection at conference, research committee).
  • Advises other departments on survey research methods and reporting. May train other research staff on study design, methodology and advanced analytics.
  • Maintains training certifications, including in human subjects research and financial conflict of interest.
  • May supervise temporary staff when temporaries are needed to assist with time-sensitive data processing.
  • Provides other support to the Vice President of Research as needed.
