About The Position

As a member of the Connected Experience and Agentic Systems lab, you will be part of the Information Displays and Optics Group. You will participate in the development of compact optical solutions for automotive use. As a researcher in optics team, you will apply your expertise in display media technology, your rapid prototyping capabilities, as well as your project management skills, to lead the development of testable advanced head-down and head-up display systems. Ultimately, you will implement your high-value designs into production. In this position, you will work closely with GM internal customers to develop the next generation product. You will publish your research findings in peer-reviewed journals to enhance the reputation of General Motors. You will also network effectively with vendors, research institutes, and other advanced technology laboratories to create a partnership network that can be used to leverage investments and augment the GM skills. The successful candidate will demonstrate the capability to excel at several of the following job elements: Pioneer the development of advanced display media technology for automotive systems, including projection display, HUD, OLED, AMLCD, microLED, and flexible displays. Self-directed creation of novel ideas that are aligned with technology development roadmap. Use advanced optical modeling toolsets, devise unique high value solutions. Create testable prototypes of these solutions and document your research findings. Interact with internal customers, vendors, and external research organizations to refine the understanding of requirements and identify innovation opportunities. Apply formal project management training with rigor to develop and execute project plans to coordinate a team effort in the development of high value designs and prototypes. Apply business training, technical depth, and innovation acumen to survey and select potential partners in flat optics. Contribute to GM R&D through internal and external publications. Facilitate technology transfer via active participation in inter-organizational teams.

Requirements

  • The position is subject to export control restrictions and requires the successful candidate to be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee or refugee).
  • Required: Master’s degree in Engineering or a Physical Science, with a solid background in optics
  • 3-5 years of work experience
  • Keen software skills
  • Proven ability to develop project goals and plans
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Desire and ability to work as a member of project team to achieve high impact goals, coupled with the initiative necessary to independently execute innovative research projects
  • Demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles and execute project plans
  • Self-driven individual with strong team skills
  • Multidisciplinary engineering skills

Nice To Haves

  • PhD degree in Engineering or Physical Science
  • Optical modeling acumen and facility with standard optical modeling software packages
  • Experience with optical system design
  • Experience with using deep learning and/or machine learning to solve optical problems
  • Capability to build your own modeling code
  • Understanding of and experience with digital holography, photonic crystals, and structured media
  • Experience with fabricating unique photonic devices
  • Formal program management training, with the ability to utilize program management tools and processes to risk manage and execute complex projects.
  • History of success in applying advanced technology to enhance usability of complex systems
  • Strong evidence of career performance excellence in position of ever-increasing levels of responsibility and challenge
  • Evidence of team leadership acumen
