About The Position

Research Technologist for the Skin Tissue Engineering and Morphology (STEM) Core of the Skin Biology and Diseases Resource-based Center, an internationally-known Core for providing state-of-the-art services and training in skin culture models. Will be involved in research to develop 3D organoid models of skin with multiple cell types with healthy, gene-engineered, and patient-derived cells. Interfaces with dozens of scientists at Northwestern who use services of the SBDRC. Provides skin cell-related services to users, maintains STEM Core cell biobank, places required orders, develops new services, maintains billing and inventory information, and generates reports. Participates in design and execution of research. Conducts experimental tests and procedures and processes and analyzes data. Reviews and revises existing research methodologies. Will be trained to process 3D model sections and other tissue sections for histopathology. Contributes to research and development efforts of the STEM Core, with the aim to keep us at the leading edge of cutaneous biology. Ensures overall lab compliance with all associated rules and regulations.

Requirements

  • BS in a biomedical science and >2 years experience in tissue culture techniques; or 4 years practical lab/bench experience; or a research-based MS in biomedical science
  • Demonstrated laboratory experience
  • Aseptic technique in cell and tissue culture
  • Demonstrated ability to be trained and follow detailed instructions as required by research protocols
  • Demonstrated computer skills, including spreadsheets and basic computations
  • Attention to detail and accurate record keeping
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Use of Microsoft Office Suite

Nice To Haves

  • MS with >2 years experience in related field
  • Proficiency in skin cell isolation and culture from human and mouse tissue

Responsibilities

  • Conducts research related to human and mouse skin cells to impact epithelial-related science, provide services to core facility users, and develop new services in association with the Directors' Research and Development initiatives.
  • Following overall research objectives, independently designs, plans, conducts and troubleshoots experiments.
  • Maintains the STEM Core biobank
  • Trains in all culture procedures and histologic preparations as requested by clientele
  • Evaluates protocols and data obtained from groups of experiments and recommends changes to processes, procedures and techniques to improve quality and validity of results based upon overall project objectives.
  • Maintains detailed records of cell biobank and protocols
  • Observes experiments, collects, records, summarizes, analyzes and interprets research data.
  • Negotiates purchases with vendors.
  • Tracks and summarizes lab supply expenses.
  • Verifies accuracy of invoices.
  • Orders and/or maintains inventory of reagent and lab supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
