About The Position

The research technician will assist with tasks to further the Santos lab’s goals of integrating phylogenetics, biogeography, ecology, and morphometrics to explain the evolution of fishes. These tasks include routine laboratory techniques such as DNA extractions with clean technique and maintenance of shared laboratory; communicating with other museums to arrange loans; assisting with the Division of Fishes’ digitization goals; assisting with purchasing for the lab; and testing the quality of data generated by the lab with supervision and guidance from Dr. Santos. The candidate will not be required to prepare final reports or manuscripts. The Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology within the College of Arts and Sciences seeks a detail-oriented laboratory technician to join our team. The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest college and the academic heart of the university. The College hosts 81 majors. Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience in a laboratory setting

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in a biological sciences field
  • Experience in laboratory bench techniques including clean technique and DNA extractions with prior exposure to command line language such as R and prior exposure to bioinformatics tools such as BLAST
  • Experience working in a natural history museum setting, familiarity with online aggregators of museum databases (e.g. VertNet, GBIF) familiarity with fish biology, prior exposure to high performance computing, and prior exposure to biological imaging techniques such as micro-CT scanning
