About The Position

The Flavell Lab at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts is seeking a Research Technician to join our team. Our lab investigates how neural circuits generate neural activity patterns that give rise to complex behaviors. We use the model system C. elegans and combine genetics, optogenetics, in vivo calcium imaging, and quantitative behavioral methods to uncover fundamental organizational and functional principles of the brain. For more information about the Flavell Lab, please visit: Steven – Flavell Lab About the Role We are seeking a motivated and creative researcher to conduct molecular, genetic, optogenetic, imaging, and quantitative behavioral experiments aimed at understanding how neural circuits produce complex behaviors in C. elegans. This position provides the opportunity to contribute to basic discoveries about circuit architecture, function, and how neural activity gives rise to behavior. We expect the hired lab member to participate fully in experimental design, data interpretation, and creative scientific inquiry, rather than perform routine or procedural tasks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in neuroscience, biology, or a related scientific field.
  • Familiarity with molecular biology techniques (e.g., plasmid cloning, western blotting, genetic crosses) and experimental approaches in neuroscience (e.g., electrophysiology or calcium imaging).
  • Basic coding familiarity (Python, Julia, R, or Matlab).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to analyze data and prepare figures suitable for publication.
  • A highly motivated, organized, and creative mindset, with the ability to work effectively in a team and balance immersive research with basic lab support tasks.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong quantitative and/or computational skills preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct molecular, genetic, optogenetic, imaging, and behavioral experiments in C. elegans to investigate how neural circuits generate complex behaviors.
  • Participate in the design, planning, and execution of experiments.
  • Analyze and interpret large-scale datasets using quantitative and/or computational methods.
  • Engage in creative, hypothesis-driven research that contributes to the lab’s scientific directions and discoveries.
  • Assist with lab management, organization, equipment maintenance, and safety compliance.

Benefits

  • Hands-on experience in a dynamic and immersive research environment.
  • Opportunities for authorship on scientific publications.
  • Direct mentorship and formalized professional development support.
  • Conference participation, including attendance at national and internal scientific meetings.
  • Extensive practice with public speaking through lab meetings, presentations, and collaborative discussions.
  • Additional technical training that strengthens readiness for advanced research roles or positions in industry.
  • A supportive and collaborative team committed to fostering your growth as a scientist.
  • Competitive pay, exceptional health benefits, retirement plans, time off, and a range of recognition and wellness programs.
