About The Position

As The BioRC Laboratory Technician III in the CHOP BioRepository Core (BioRC) will primarily be responsible carrying out the day to day operations of BioRC, including automated (robotic) and manual processes for sample processing, aliquoting, cell cryopreservation, and nucleic acid extraction, and logistics for specimen labeling, accession, storage, and shipping. The BioRC Laboratory Technician III will be expected to become an expert LIMS user. The BioRC Laboratory Technician III will be expected to take part in project and request management and communication and interaction with clients. The BioRC Laboratory Technician III will also be accountable to take part in a Contingency Plan to protect the BioRepository resources. The BioRC Laboratory Technician III will be expected to ensure best practices and quality standards are followed. The BioRC Laboratory Technician III will be expected to work alongside the Institutional Biobank (IBB) to both collect samples and create procedures for storage within the BioRC. The individual will be committed to continuous process improvement, performing with integrity and accountability.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma / GED Required
  • At least three (3) years of related classroom experience or successful completion of a technical training program (eg. Wistar, WPSI) and research laboratory experience Preferred
  • Advanced understanding of lab procedures, protocols, and equipment.
  • Intermediate proficiency with lab specific experiments / techniques.
  • Intermediate scientific analysis skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree Preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in automated liquid handling, and/or automated or manual nucleic acid extraction preferred.
  • Experience in procuring, processing, and managing biospecimens (Blood, DNA, RNA, protein, tissue) preferred.
  • Experience with laboratory information management systems and/or databases preferred

Responsibilities

  • PBMC isolation from whole blood
  • Automated DNA isolation from whole blood (DNA extraction from residual CBCs)
  • DNA isolation from whole blood and saliva; DNA/RNA isolation from flash frozen tissue
  • RNA isolation from whole blood.
  • QC analysis of DNA and RNA, including the determination of concentration and quality of samples.
  • Manual DNA extraction.
  • Operation and maintenance of equipment used for automated DNA/RNA extraction.
  • Performs child aliquoting of DNA, RNA, and tissue samples.
  • Operation and maintenance of liquid handling equipment for large quantity aliquoting.
  • Helps to develop and implement SOPs for biospecimen preparation, processing, handling and storage, including automated procedures.
  • Navigate and operate within LIMS and provide input for improvements.
  • Performing accessioning in LIMS system.
  • Independently monitor, maintain and change LN2 tanks throughout Repository Laboratory space and in BIOS.
  • Successfully store and retrieve samples from storage units without exceeding temperature range.
  • Prepares laboratory reagents, monitor and maintain laboratory inventory.
  • Develops and maintains professional knowledge of current GLP, CAP, biobanking, and sample management policies and best practices and guidelines and applies this knowledge appropriately to the operation of the BioRepository.
  • Participates in Project Team Meetings and provides periodic updates on sample processing and management of projects.
  • Participates in a Contingency Plan to protect BioRepository samples.
  • Coordinate with the Institutional Biobank (IBB) to collect and store requested samples in a timely manner and within appropriate storage conditions.
  • Authoring and updating SOPs required for IBB specific tasks.
