The Health System encompasses Duke University Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital, Duke Raleigh Hospital, Duke Primary Care, Duke Home and Hospice, Duke Health and Wellness, and multiple affiliations.We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Research Technician to join our research lab focused on the human fungal pathogen, Cryptococcus neoformans. The successful candidate will support ongoing research projects that involved molecular genetics, cell biology, and functional genomics. This person will assist with yeast strains preservation and organization and in day-to-day lab operations. Our laboratory is a team-based and therefore the candidate must be able to work both independently, but also as part of the team. Animal work is required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Genetics, Biology, Biochemistry, or related field
  • Prior hands-on experience with molecular biology and genetic techniques
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Be willing to handle animals

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working with yeast and mice
  • Familiarity with sterile technique and microbiology practices
  • Experience with software tools for data analysis (e.g., Excel, ImageJ, SnapGene)

Responsibilities

  • Culture, maintain, and genetically manipulate Cryptococcus strains
  • Perform standard molecular biology techniques, including PCR, DNA/RNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, and plasmid construction
  • Carry out yeast transformations, growth assays, and phenotypic characterizations
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of experimental procedures and results
  • Assist in lab maintenance, including inventory management, solution preparation, and equipment upkeep
  • Contribute to data analysis and help prepare figures for presentations or publications
  • Participate in lab meetings and collaborate with other lab members
  • Assist key lab safety person with compliance of the institutional safety and regulatory policies
