This entry-level research technical role participates in a planned research projects by performing research protocols, experimental procedures and other laboratory tasks under direct supervision. May occasionally exercise minimal discretion and judgment in execution and interpretation of experiments, and of data derived. The Matute Lab team uses a combination of approaches involving human samples, genetically modified animal models, gnotobiology, next generation sequencing and immunophenotyping to study how early-life host-environmental interactions occur under normal conditions. We also investigate how disturbances in these processes can contribute to intestinal inflammatory conditions such as necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and inflammatory bowel disease, and systemic inflammatory diseases such as obesity. Our goal is to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms that govern host-microbiome-diet communication in infants. By expanding knowledge of normal host-microbiome interactions through bench-to-bedside work, we aim to develop targeted interventions to reduce and treat intestinal and systemic inflammatory diseases from birth.
