About The Position

The University of Rochester is seeking a Research Technician I to join a research team focused on understanding the biology of acute myeloid leukemia using advanced technologies. This role involves laboratory work in molecular and cellular biology, specifically in stem cell and cancer biology with an emphasis on hematological disorders. The individual will perform moderately complex laboratory experiments, requiring excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. This position offers a unique opportunity for individuals looking to launch a career in research (PhD) or medicine (MD), providing a foundation in cancer and stem cell biology for both academic and industry paths. Initially, the technician will work under regular supervision from the Project Director or designee, with the expectation to develop independence in experiment planning and execution over time.

Nice To Haves

  • College level training in cellular and/or molecular biology.
  • Associate's degree Health Science, Biology, Chemistry or other science related field of study.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in the field of molecular and cell biology, including sterile technique and tissue culture methodologies.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including written communication.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with staff and faculty of all levels.
  • Experience in a large complex health care or academic setting.
  • Understanding of medical or laboratory terminology.
  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine cell culture of primary bone marrow derived hematopoietic cells.
  • Perform assays involved in the functional characterization of normal and abnormal hematopoietic progenitors including: use of flow cytometry to monitor HSC and blood cell progenitors in vivo, bone marrow transplantation assays, intraperitoneal and subcutaneous injections, tail and submandibular bleedings, etc.
  • Genotyping and maintenance of mouse strains under PI supervision.
  • Maintain detailed lab journal.
  • Record and calculate results.
  • Present data in prescribed formats.
  • Use input from PI and lab members to trouble shoot experiments and equipment malfunctions.
  • Perform general laboratory duties such as preparing reagents and re-stocking supplies and maintenance of cryopreservation systems.
  • Help to ensure laboratory compliance for biosafety, EHS and fire inspections.
  • Perform other job duties and tasks as assigned.
