About The Position

Research Technician I, under general supervision performs entry level, semi-skilled, technical fieldwork to support research on the effects of urbanization on the breeding and movement ecology of White-winged Doves in Texas. The selected technician will assist the Smith Lab at the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute with field operations for a coordinated GPS telemetry, banding, and nest-monitoring project in Houston. Technicians will work closely with graduate students, staff, and collaborators to conduct daily field activities and support the overall needs of the program as needed by the Project Supervisor. Position will be based in Houston for 16 weeks (April – August 2026). Housing provided.

Requirements

  • Education – High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience – Two years of related experience.
  • Ability to – Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Licensing / Professional Certification – None.
  • Physical Requirements – Ability to lift moderately heavy objects. Ability to exert heavy force.
  • Work beyond normal business hours and/or work on weekends not exceeding 40 hour work week.
  • All positions are security-sensitive. Responsibilities

  • Traps, bands, and releases White-winged Doves following established protocols.
  • Assists with the deployment of GPS transmitters on White-winged Doves.
  • Conducts nest searches and monitoring of White-winged Doves.
  • Complete vegetation surveys.
  • Maintain accurate data collection and entry using paper datasheets and online databases.
  • Assemble and operate technical equipment such as traps and GPS units.
  • Assist senior staff members in planning and conducting daily field efforts.
  • Interact professionally with landowners, volunteers, and the general public while conducting fieldwork.
  • Regularly conducts data entry, quality control checks, and organization of collected data.
  • Assists with GIS and other remote sensing efforts
  • Assists with field summaries, photographs, and other documentation as needed for reports and presentations.
  • Maintains field vehicles, equipment, and supplies and reports issues promptly to project supervisors.
