About The Position

The Long Lab focuses on understanding the mechanisms of immune tolerance, examining why this tolerance breaks down in autoimmune diseases, and developing therapies to improve it. The Human Immunophenotyping (HIP) core utilizes cutting edge technologies to enable the study of immune-mediated diseases. This role offers a unique opportunity to work in both a core lab and a research lab environment, gaining exposure to a wide range of research questions and techniques related to immunology. The Research Technician I position conducts laboratory experiments and assists in various research activities to support scientific studies and data collection.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in a scientific field and basic laboratory skills required.
  • Must have basic mathematical, data recording, and statistical analysis skills.
  • Must be comfortable working with potentially hazardous materials and human samples (e.g., blood).
  • A successful candidate would be eager to learn and grow within the role, be willing to take on challenges and persevere through troubleshooting, be proactive in seeking help and asking questions, have strong attention to detail and documentation skills, have an ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently, and have excellent communication skills for presenting findings and collaborating with team members.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior work in a laboratory environment preferred.
  • Prior experience involving sterile technique, mammalian tissue culture, and/or multiparameter flow cytometry desired.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood and cell processing using sterile techniques.
  • Conduct short in vitro cultures or stimulations of cells.
  • Prepare samples for flow cytometry, genomic analysis, or other assays.
  • Operate a variety of laboratory instruments such as flow and mass cytometers and sorters, PCR machines, cell counters, and other measuring instruments and devices.
  • Assist in panel design and flow cytometry data analysis.
  • Conduct additional immune-related assays such as ELISA and qPCR.
  • Prepare buffers, clean lab areas, and order and maintain lab supplies.
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and maintain laboratory records.
  • Use analysis software associated with instruments (e.g. FlowJo) and for statistical analysis (e.g. Excel, GraphPad Prism, and JMP).
  • Collaborate with senior research technicians and assist post-doctoral researchers.
  • Conduct literature searches as necessary.
  • Compile and present findings at lab meetings.
