About The Position

The Research Technician I position for the South Texas Lion Project involves providing technical support for wildlife research, specifically focusing on mountain lions. This temporary role, lasting four months, includes tasks such as deploying trail cameras, maintaining a photo database, tracking collared mountain lions, and collecting biological samples. The position is based at the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute and includes housing at San Pedro Ranch.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Two years of related experience
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others
  • US driver's license required
  • Ability to lift moderately heavy objects and exert heavy force
  • Excellent data management skills and ability to record and organize information

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the deployment and maintenance of trail camera grid targeting mountain lions
  • Maintain camera trapping photo database and classify images using AI and manual techniques
  • Track collared mountain lions using telemetry and investigate GPS clusters
  • Collect and organize mountain lion scat and other biological samples
  • Participate in the work-ups of mountain lions
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Assist with other carnivore fieldwork in South Texas if opportunities arise
