About The Position

This position will serve as the research technician in the lab of Dr. Arthi Kanthasamy in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. This position involves working with graduate students and other senior research personnel. The research lab conducts NIH-funded basic research pertaining to neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory mechanisms in cell culture and preclinical mouse models of Parkinson's disease and related neurological disorders. The lab's translational research focuses on biomarker discovery in human samples and testing novel therapeutics in preclinical animal models.

Requirements

  • Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate.
  • Experience and/or willingness to perform research.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, maintain accurate documentation, and pay attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a sometimes-stressful environment.
  • Ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills while carrying out instructions.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality, while providing consultation to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Basic computer knowledge in MS Word and Excel.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with mouse work is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and assist in the implementation of research projects including data collection and project management.
  • Read and develop a basic understanding of research project protocols.
  • Maintain accurate records on every aspect of research projects.
  • Proper disposal of biohazard waste.
  • Perform inventory, and provide basic maintenance and ordering of research supplies and equipment.
  • Assist graduate students and other senior research personnel with their experiments.
  • Responsibilities of this position will include multiple aspects of scientific research including experimental design and execution, assay optimization and validation, data collection, and project management.
  • Professionally communicate with the supervisor, graduate students and research personnel concerning the affected workflow, time limitations, and project status.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and calm demeanor throughout stressful situations.
  • Accept constructive criticism.
  • Write reports and present them to colleagues and supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
