About The Position

The successful candidate will, through individual efforts or participation in functional project teams, conduct seed increase of plants of Taraxacum kok-saghyz, perform field evaluations of plants of this species, acclimate in vitro plants for subsequent seed production of such plants, procure and maintain greenhouse equipment, tools and supplies; ensure and develop safety codes and standard operating procedures are up to date and followed; provide supervision and mentoring and training to graduate student employees and other project personnel; participate in TARDISS outreach and extension events; provide support to TARDISS as needed. This position is located on the Wooster campus of The Ohio State University.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education in Horticulture, Plant Science, Agriculture
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience is required
  • Excellent written, oral communication and critical thinking skills

Responsibilities

  • Conduct seed increase of plants of Taraxacum kok-saghyz in greenhouse conditions; develop protocols of seed increase; prevent disease and pests issues as well as methods of control; maintain sanitary conditions of plans being grown in greenhouse; procure access to plant growth services (e.g. growth chambers and greenhouses) as well as materials, supplies, and consumables for the successful production of seed, maintain an inventory of seed in storage and produced; summarize samples and data; ensure greenhouses and growth chambers are maintained in highly organized and clean condition.
  • Perform field evaluations of plants of Taraxacum kok-saghyz; plan plating, management, and harvest of plant in experimental fields; develop protocols to improve establishment and grow of plants in the field; collaborate with teams withing TARDISS and CFAES to develop protocols for herbicide scheduling, and cultural management of plants in the field; prevent disease and pests issues as well as methods of control; procure access to field equipment (e.g. cultivators and harvesters) as well as materials, supplies, and consumables for the successful production of plants and roots; summarize samples and data; ensure that facilities for sample storage are organized.
  • Acclimate in vitro plants of Taraxacum kok-saghyz recovered from biotechnological engineering and tissue culture; develop protocols to transition such plants to seed production environments; collaborate with teams withing TARDISS and CFAES to prevent disease and pests issues and methods of control; procure access to plant growth services (e.g. growth chambers and greenhouses) materials, supplies, and consumables for the successful production of seed, maintain an inventory of seed in storage and produced; summarize samples and data; ensure greenhouses and growth chambers are maintained in highly organized and clean condition.
  • Participate in TARDISS outreach and extension events; participates in team-based research, submission of weekly and monthly project reports, and attendance at project meetings.
  • Provide support to TARDISS as needed.
  • Supervisory duties may include: supervising undergraduate/graduate students and/or staff performing greenhouse/field tasks; training undergraduate/graduate students and/or staff in greenhouse and field plant production operations.
