About The Position

Seeking a motivated and highly organized individual for a research specialist position in a basic biomedical science laboratory focused on neuroimmunology research. The laboratory's research focuses on studying neuroinflammation following Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The laboratory utilizes various TBI models and several mouse strains. Techniques mainly used in the laboratory include microscopy, cellular and molecular immune profile analysis, and behavioral analysis (both motor and cognitive function). The individual will work closely with and report directly to the PI, playing a central role in the day-to-day operations of the lab. Responsibilities include developing animal protocols, managing budgets and ordering, participating in routine experiments and maintaining a basic biomedical science laboratory. Additionally, the individual is expected to advise and assist the PI and lab members on all laboratory projects.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology or other natural, life or health care science and one year work experience directly related to the assigned research area.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in projects related to above described work. The research specialist will help write and maintain animal protocols as well as assist in experimental procedures including maintaining animal colonies, behavioral experiments, data analysis, tissue harvesting and processing, and histological analysis.
  • Perform essential functions of the lab. These include ordering, overseeing supply, monitoring spending for budgetary and reporting purposes, keeping accurate records of animal colonies and experimental procedures, maintenance of laboratory equipment, and keeping the lab safe, clean, and compliant with MUSC safety guidelines.
  • Assist other lab personnel in related projects. This includes training new or visiting lab members on standard protocols and procedures within the lab, participating in lab meetings and project-specific meetings.
  • Maintaining proper documentation or all records (budget, experimental, etc.) and up to date lab notebook. The research specialist will also support the PI in the preparation of manuscript and grant submissions. The individual is expected to stay up to date with relevant literature.
