Responsibilities: Under general guidance and with latitude for exercising independent technical judgment, performs research related activities limited in scope and complexity in a specialized field. This work will support the planning, design, and execution of experiments as well as direct studies. The Research Specialist will use existing protocols and will collaborate with other laboratories. Works independently with occasional input on modifying, varying or adapting standard laboratory procedures to meet special needs of research projects. Technical Associate I position in the Drosophila genetics & genomics laboratory of Professor Daven Presgraves in the Department of Biology, University of Rochester. Responsibilities: - Responsibilities involve aiding the PI in the conduct of genetics, molecular biology, and genomics research; data collection and management; laboratory management; and personnel management. - Research responsibilities include conducting experimental work in molecular biology and Drosophila fruitfly genetics. Strong molecular biology expertise, trouble-shooting skills, and ability to work independently are essential. Commonly used methods in the lab include: DNA and RNA isolation; PCR; quantitative PCR; gel electrophoresis; DNA sequencing and analysis; restriction digests; cloning, transformation, site-directed mutagenesis, and transgene construction; and confocal microscopy. The successful applicant will have considerable independence, opportunity for input, and latitude in conducting research. - The Drosophila work may involve experimental genetics crosses, tissue dissections, and data collection. Molecular biology work may involve assaying gene expression, protein-DNA interactions, generating transgene reagents, and/or immunocytology. - Personnel management duties involve training and overseeing undergraduate workers responsible for dishwashing and/or maintenance of the fly stock collection; mentoring undergraduate researchers; and facilitating graduate and postdoctoral research and training efforts. - Data management duties include maintaining organized laboratory notebooks, transcription of data from notebooks to organized and archived computer files, and occasional preparation of data summary reports. - Lab management duties include maintenance of lab supplies; preparation of reagents; ensuring lab and employee compliance with safety regulations; and maintenance of a lab chemical inventory. Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • 1 year of related work experience required involving direct assistance to researchers or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Familiarity with MS Office programs (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
  • Generate and organize large sets of data, strains, and plasmids, and should be familiar with all aspects of a laboratory to effectively help organize the lab
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment as needed
  • Excellent organization skills to help coordinate a number of projects, and the skills to help train inexperienced personnel
