About The Position

The SAILARC Manager oversees efficient and productive operation of SAILARC, which will include support for the Department’s research and teaching objectives and collaborative programs with UWM laboratories and external partners. Principal duties (as defined more specifically below) will include maintaining operational status of all SAILARC instrumentation, training users on instrument operation, techniques, and data analysis, providing analytical services for collaborators, and general laboratory organization and management. The Manager will work with a variety of UWM offices to assure compliance with relevant health, safety, and other requirements. The SAILARC Manager reports to the Department Chair, who may in turn delegate work assignments and oversight to other Department Faculty or Academic Staff.

Requirements

  • PhD degree in Analytical Chemistry or equivalent with hands-on experience in mass spectrometry.
  • Demonstrated mathematical, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to independently prioritize work to meet multiple deadlines.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of principles of computer operation and terminology, common software packages (MS Office, etc.), and mass spec data analysis software.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and/or industry clients.
  • High level understanding of laboratory operations and safety principles.

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years’ experience in mass spectrometry procedures and instrument maintenance.
  • Experience managing an analytical core facility.
  • Demonstrated mechanical understanding and hands-on skills, as applicable to high performance laboratory instrument repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to safely maneuver and operate pressurized gas cylinders.
  • Ability and desire to continually upgrade knowledge and skills through independent study and training.
  • Familiarity with additional software packages (Adobe, SciFinder etc.)

Responsibilities

  • LABORATORY REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE AND GENERAL OPERATIONAL READINESS
  • Develop and implement a repair and maintenance schedule to assure operational readiness of all SAILARC instruments.
  • Maintain user logs and security access measures.
  • Perform repair and maintenance procedures pursuant to the A.1 schedule and coordinate with outside vendors for service contract activities.
  • Maintain a supply of parts adequate for urgent repair needs.
  • Coordinate with manufacturers for instrument upgrades.
  • Routinely monitor and record the function of instrumentation.
  • Maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for major instruments current and accurate to support reliable operation, effective maintenance, and overall laboratory readiness.
  • Maintain adequate supply of chemicals, reagents, gases, and the like to assure instrument readiness and routine operation; place orders, receive items, and comply with all chemical purchasing and inventory procedures of the Department.
  • Coordinate with PI’s for specialty chemical needs.
  • In consultation with the Department Safety Committee and Building Chair(s), establish, implement, and monitor procedures for occupant and visitor safety in the SAILARC, liaise with UWM health and safety offices, and coordinate with building/Department staff to ensure compliance with health and safety policies.
  • Evaluate and maintain a budget for supplies and submit a quarterly budget report, with suggestions for increasing efficiency in operating the Laboratory.
  • Develop detailed records for billing of Laboratory time and/or services for charge-back to research grants, other academic units, or external collaborators.
  • Maintain and implement a chemical inventory and hazard communication system to assure compliance with UWM policies.
  • Assure proper disposing of waste in compliance with UWM policies.
  • Maintain an organized library of instrument manuals.
  • Maintain general professional appearance and cleanliness of SAILARC.
  • PERFORM ANALYTICAL TESTING PROCEDURES
  • Develop a scheduling scheme for routine and ad-hoc sample testing and maintain a log of procedures performed, requestor, and instrument details and will submit analysis of charges/costs to the Department for invoicing (if applicable).
  • Perform analytical testing procedures as needed using any of the major instruments in the SAILARC.
  • Procedures may include experimental design, sample preparation, trouble shooting, instrument calibration, instrument operation, data analysis, and result reporting.
  • Assist other users in assay trouble shooting and data analysis.
  • TRAINING
  • Maintain a high level of personal proficiency, through training, reading, and practice, on the theory and operation of all SAILARC major instruments.
  • Conduct instrument training sessions for PIs, students, and collaborators.
  • Maintain a training schedule and log.
  • Coordinate with outside parties for on-site training sessions.
  • MISCELLANEOUS DUTIES
  • Participate in the SAILARC operations management committee or other Department committees as requested.
  • Assist teaching and research faculty with laboratory related activities as requested.
  • Participate in and/or manage outreach activities that may include the use of the SAILARC space and/or provide demonstration experiments.
  • Provide technical content for grants or other publications.
  • Work with faculty on the development and provision of new laboratory courses.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.
  • Develops operating policies and procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and unit objectives
  • Develops and facilitates research specific presentations to internal and external audiences
  • Assists with the development and auditing of project-specific budgets
  • Assists with the design, monitoring, and execution of project-specific experiments.
  • Identifies and resolves technical issues
  • Serves as a subject matter expert and unit liaison.
  • Provides updates on project components and timelines to stakeholders as needed
  • May direct the day-to-day activities of staff and resolve routine personnel issues
