About The Position

The SETI Institute seeks an exceptional Research Scientist to advance the search for technosignatures-indicators of advanced extraterrestrial civilizations. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead cutting-edge research spanning both theoretical and observational domains, utilizing state-of-the-art facilities and pioneering approaches to explore one of humanity's most profound questions: Are we alone in the universe? The successful candidate will work on technosignature searches across multiple wavebands, with emphasis on leveraging programs like the Allen Telescope Array (ATA) and COSMIC on the Very Large Array (VLA). They will also explore diverse detection strategies that extend beyond traditional radio technosignatures, encompassing other electromagnetic wavebands and innovative approaches to identifying potential indicators of intelligent life.

Requirements

  • A PhD in astrophysics, astronomy, physics, planetary science, or a closely related field.
  • A stellar publication record demonstrating expertise in technosignature science, SETI, astrophysics, or a related domain.
  • Broad experience in observational astronomy, data analysis, and/or theoretical modeling across one or more wavebands (radio, optical, infrared, etc.).
  • Familiarity with advanced computational and statistical methods, including machine learning, is advantageous.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • A passion for exploring diverse, creative approaches to technosignature science.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct world-class research in the field of technosignature science, addressing a wide spectrum of observational, theoretical, and data-driven challenges.
  • Design and execute observational campaigns using premier facilities such as the ATA, VLA, and other multi-wavelength observatories.
  • Develop new theoretical models and detection frameworks for a diverse array of technosignatures, including electromagnetic, planetary, and biosignature proxies.
  • Contribute to the advancement of machine learning and other computational tools for large-scale data analysis.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, and technologists.
  • Publish high-impact research in leading scientific journals and present findings at major conferences.
  • Seek external funding to support research projects and collaborations.
