About The Position

The newly established “Synuclein Interest Group” at the Byrd Alzheimer’s Center and Research Institute is inviting applications from recent graduates for a research scientist position. Our research program focuses on Parkinson’s disease biology. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing rodent colonies (mouse and rat), conducting experiments, documenting results, analyzing data, and maintaining laboratory equipment. Both full-time and part-time positions are available.

Requirements

  • This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a natural, physical or medical science.
  • Must be willing to work with rodents.
  • Must have experience in wet labs preferably with cell culture or molecular biology techniques (cloning, plasmid DNA isolation and PCR).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in neuroscience, biochemistry, or a related biological field.
  • Prior experience is highly desirable.
  • Experience in primary neuron culture is desirable.
  • Self-motivated and driven.

Responsibilities

  • Manage rodent (mouse and rat) colonies.
  • Catalog, wean, and document mice and rats.
  • Perform mouse behavioral studies.
  • Maintain primary neuron culture, 293T and neuroblastoma cell lines, in vitro assays, examine protein expression by western blot.
  • Execute general molecular biology e.g. cloning, plasmid preps, and genotyping.
  • Contribute to design of research protocols together with supervisor and other senior scientists in the lab.
  • Maintain lab resource inventories.
  • Coordinate daily schedule of experiments.
  • Responsible for data management: collect, record, tabulate, and present data.
  • Create graphs of experimental, perform statistical tests, and discuss progress of work regularly with supervisor.
  • Work independently, under minimal supervision.
  • Execute protocols involving a variety of routine and non-routine experiments at a professional level.
  • In collaboration with other members of the research team, give input to research design.
  • Perform laboratory experiments following established protocols and procedures.
  • Prepare and handle samples, reagents, and solutions, ensuring accuracy and adherence to safety guidelines.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments, conducting routine calibration and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Responsible for maintaining lab supplies, and cataloging chemicals.
  • Assist in data interpretation and presentation, contributing to research findings and reports.
  • Perform any additional lab duties as assigned by the supervisor as needs arise.
