About The Position

We are seeking a Research Scientist to join our world-class team at Schlumberger Doll Research (SDR) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where breakthrough science meets real-world impact. In this role, you will help shape the future of energy by inventing and advancing next generation process systems that enable cleaner, more efficient, and more sustainable energy solutions. At SDR, research doesn’t stop at theory—you will work at the intersection of fundamental science, hands-on experimentation, and scalable industrial deployment, tackling some of the most pressing challenges of the global energy transition. Your work will directly contribute to reducing carbon intensity, improving energy efficiency, and enabling new clean energy and decarbonization technologies across SLB’s portfolio. This position is ideal for a scientist or engineer driven by curiosity and purpose—someone excited to design and run cutting-edge laboratory and pilot scale experiments, transform insights into deployable technologies, and see their ideas make a measurable impact on the path to a lower carbon, more sustainable energy system.

Requirements

  • PhD degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or related fields with relevant courses.
  • Experience in hands-on research or technology development within oil & gas, chemical, food, or related process industries
  • Ability to connect experimental observations with first-principles engineering models.
  • Working knowledge of process simulation and modeling tools
  • Programming skills related to data processing and analysis , such as Python, Matlab, R, or equivalent

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrable experience in unit operations (separations, reactors, heat & mass transfer) that delivered step-change improvements in energy efficiency, footprint, and cost across laboratory, pilot, and early scale-up stages
  • Programming skills related to instrumentation, data collection and analysis, such as LabView, Python, or equivalent

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute laboratory-scale and pilot-scale experiments to develop new or improved processes.
  • Build experimental setups, define test protocols, and analyze experimental data.
  • Translate experimental results into scalable process designs and performance predictions.
  • Develop and validate process simulation models using tools such as Aspen Plus, HYSYS, gPROMS, or equivalent.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams spanning R&D, engineering, manufacturing, and commercialization.
  • Document results through technical reports, presentations, and intellectual property disclosures.

Benefits

  • SLB offers a comprehensive total rewards package, which includes variable pay, health care coverage, a retirement plan, protection programs, paid time off, and various training opportunities.
