Clemson University is seeking a Research Scientist to join our team, focusing on the development of innovative technologies for water monitoring. This position is integral to advancing our environmental monitoring capabilities and will involve a combination of design, development, and hands-on manufacturing tasks. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the maintenance, production, and deployment of state-of-the-art low-power systems designed for environmental monitoring applications. This role requires a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles, as well as experience with software development and electronic design. The Research Scientist will engage in various activities, including designing mechanical fixtures and test setups using mechanical modeling software such as Solidworks. Ensuring the structural and thermal integrity of these designs will be critical, and the candidate will utilize techniques like Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to validate their work. Additionally, the role involves developing experimental setups to study fluid flow phenomena and other environmental parameters, employing advanced measurement techniques to gather data. Hands-on experience is essential, as the Research Scientist will manufacture mechanical prototypes using various techniques, including 3D printing, laser cutting, and traditional hand tools. The position also requires maintaining a C/C++ codebase and developing firmware for the Intelligent River® embedded platform, as well as designing custom printed circuit boards (PCBs) for microcontrollers and sensors using software such as Autodesk Eagle or KiCad. This multifaceted role offers the opportunity to contribute significantly to environmental science and technology at Clemson University.
