The Department of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC is seeking a Research Scientist to lead research into ALS and related neurological diseases. The approach will be to generate in vitro models of human neurodegenerative diseases by converting patients’ skin fibroblasts into disease-affected neural cells. This enables the screening of thousands of drug-like compounds in search of potential therapeutics that slow or stop the degeneration of these cells in petri dishes — and eventually in patients. The Research Scientist will: Serve as a key research scientist who is recognized as a national authority on topics in specialized field. Acts more independently and with a greater degree of freedom than senior research associate. Plan, design and conduct highly specialized, technical and unusually complex research projects independently. Works under consultative direction from supervisor toward long-range goals and objectives. May contribute to the development of advanced new concepts, techniques and standards. Analyze research data and provides interpretations. Contributes to the development of research documentation for publication and/or prepares technical reports, papers and/or records. Develops solutions to research problems of unusually complexity, which require a high degree of ingenuity, creativity and innovativeness. Makes presentations at academic and/or practitioner conferences. Provide leadership, direction and guidance to staff and/or student workers as needed.
