About The Position

The Research Scientist - Materials Characterization - SEM position at GE Vernova involves advancing knowledge in materials development through various characterization techniques. The role requires collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to solve technical challenges and deliver innovative solutions for energy-focused projects. The scientist will operate characterization equipment, prepare samples, analyze data, and maintain accurate records while adhering to EHS guidelines.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Metallurgy, Material Science, Mechanical Technology, Chemistry or a related field, or a Master's Degree with a minimum of 3 years of experience.
  • Knowledge of sample preparation techniques and/or chemical analysis.
  • Demonstrated skill using laboratory instrumentation.
  • Proficiency or willingness to learn various characterization techniques.
  • Ability to multi-task and deliver in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work across functions and levels as part of a team.
  • Outstanding attention to detail and excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Willingness to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in electron microscopes, LECO, IC/ICP, XRF, or XRD.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to cross-train in high demand areas.
  • Expertise in operation and maintenance of equipment.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation and computer interfacing to analytical equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute characterization approaches for materials development.
  • Coordinate and operate various characterization equipment such as electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction.
  • Determine and implement sample preparation techniques for characterization.
  • Collaborate with team members to provide solutions for GE businesses and customers.
  • Maintain and operate necessary characterization equipment.
  • Analyze data and report findings to the team using appropriate tools.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed and project requirements.
  • Share project progress through presentations and written reports.
  • Foster a multidisciplinary and inclusive team environment.
  • Perform all work in accordance with EHS guidelines.
