The University of Virginia, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, is seeking applicants for a Research Scientist position. The primary responsibilities for this position include research, scholarship, and service to the department, university, and professional community. The compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department at the University of Virginia (UVA) offers a vibrant environment for interdisciplinary research and collaboration, with strengths in areas such as machine learning, imaging, cyber-physical systems, embedded systems, communication networks, and sensor systems. Faculty members benefit from access to cutting-edge facilities and are encouraged to engage in research that addresses societal challenges. The successful candidate is expected to establish an innovative research program that builds upon existing strengths at UVA in signal processing, machine learning, and education. This includes engaging collaboratively with faculty and scientists at UVA and beyond, as well as generating research proposals, promoting scholarship, engaging in service, and mentoring students to support a growing program. The successful candidate is also expected to engage in and further ongoing projects with the School of Education and Human Development at UVA.

  • Conduct research and scholarship in the field of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
  • Establish an innovative research program in signal processing, machine learning, and education.
  • Engage collaboratively with faculty and scientists at UVA and beyond.
  • Generate research proposals and promote scholarship.
  • Engage in service to the department, university, and professional community.
  • Mentor students to support a growing program.
  • Further ongoing projects with the School of Education and Human Development at UVA.
  • A Master's or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science is required by the start date.
  • A PhD is preferred.
  • A strong record of an innovative research program in the area of computer vision, image processing, and machine learning.
  • A minimum of four years of experience in computer vision, image processing, and machine learning.
  • Minimum of two years of demonstrated experience with the development and testing of machine learning models for image analysis and computer vision.
  • Expertise in artificial intelligence, including the design, testing, and analysis of machine learning architectures.
  • Experience with image processing, image analysis, and computer vision.
  • Access to cutting-edge facilities.
  • Engagement in research that addresses societal challenges.
