About The Position

The Research Scientist II will perform sequencing related tasks associated with HIV and Hepatitis C virus (HCV) for the Bloodborne Viruses Laboratory. These tasks will include extraction and amplification of nucleic acids for sequencing, analysis of sequencing data using bioinformatics tools, and clinical validation of new sequencing assays. The Research Scientist II will also prepare standard operating procedures, reports, manuscript sections, and oral and poster presentations. Duties also include processing of human biospecimens, clinical testing using molecular or serological test methods, training and supervision of staff, quality assurance activities and laboratory maintenance tasks. This position will be part of a dynamic team serving the Wadsworth Center’s mission in the New York State Department of Health’s efforts to protect and promote the health of New York’s citizens. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology and three years of research experience; OR a master’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology and two years of research experience; OR a doctorate in a related field. Degrees must be from an accredited institution.

  • Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.
  • The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location specified in the job posting and must also be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts, prior to hire.

Nice To Haves

  • At least one year of experience with molecular techniques including DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction, transcription mediated amplification, and sequencing methods.
  • At least one year of experience in molecular data analysis and the use of scientific software to analyze sequence data for the detection and/or characterization of pathogens.
  • At least one year of experience handling and processing human blood specimens in a clinical laboratory environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
