About The Position

Watchmaker is inviting applications for the full-time position of Research Scientist, based in Boulder, Colorado. This position reports to a Principal Scientist, Research and Development and will be responsible for supporting a research program focused on the development and characterization of novel, proprietary reagents for a range of genomics applications. This individual will be responsible for designing, executing and documenting experimental protocols and will work closely with the broader scientific and commercial teams. The successful candidate will thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced working environment, where ambiguity and change are common. The research scientist will contribute directly to our company culture and success. This position provides an opportunity to grow and develop as a scientist and gain valuable experience in product development and commercialization.

Requirements

  • The candidate should have a PhD (or equivalent experience) in molecular biology, biochemistry or a related discipline, with at least two years of relevant research experience. Experience in the following areas is considered highly desirable: next-generation sequencing (NGS), sample preparation, PCR, qPCR, NGS data analysis and bioinformatic pipeline development. Knowledge of DNA- and RNA-modifying enzymes is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute, reproduce and troubleshoot molecular biology lab work
  • Demonstrated ability to perform bioinformatic analyses
  • The ability to multitask, perform consistently under pressure and work without supervision
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work as an effective member of a team
  • Experience with standard molecular biology techniques such as PCR, qPCR, vector design, and gene cloning methods
  • Excellent organizational skills and outstanding attention to detail
  • Good communication and personal task management skills and a high level of self-motivation

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the following areas is considered highly desirable: next-generation sequencing (NGS), sample preparation, PCR, qPCR, NGS data analysis and bioinformatic pipeline development.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and perform molecular biology experiments including: enzyme characterization and optimization, and next-generation sequencing sample prep
  • Develop novel bioinformatics tools to analyze next-generation sequencing data
  • Independently design, implement, and maintain experiments and laboratory protocols
  • Carefully interpret data and accurately document the details of all experiments
  • Contribute to a team responsible for launch of commercially successful enzymes and genomics products
  • Participate in customer collaborations and product support
  • Identify opportunities for internal process improvement
