About The Position

We are looking for a highly-motivated Research Scientist/Engr-1 to join the growing and dynamic viral glycoprotein production team in the Veesler lab which supports vaccine and therapeutic development and structural studies of coronaviruses, paramyxoviruses, herpesviruses and other zoonotic pathogens. The position will involve competent participation in key projects, requiring analytical and decision-making skills in addition to technical skills and scientific knowledge of the field. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Ongoing duties will include skillful management and support for projects and experiments, such as Recombinant expression and purification of viral glycoproteins and other proteins in mammalian cells and E. coli (50%)with biochemical/biophysical characterization (using biolayer interferometry, ELISA, pull downs, electron microscopy) and serological evaluation of infection/vaccine-elicited antibodies using ELISA (25%). In addition to the above extensive scientific project work, this position will involve: real-time reporting and analysis of data, providing input to key decisions on the direction of experiments, analyzing and reporting results (15%); participating in writing of scientific papers and manuscripts (10%). Most of these duties require a high level of specialized scientific education and skill, and play a key part in the overall success of the research projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry, Biology or related field and one year of experience working in a biochemistry lab , OR Equivalent combination of education/experience.
  • Hands-on experience with recombinant protein expression, prokaryotic and mammalian cell culture, secreted and cytoplasmic proteins, protein purification including common chromatographic methods (affinity, size exclusion, etc.), protein biophysical characterization, binding assays, stability assays, independent planning of timelines and experiments, and effectively communicating results and/or changes/progress with the other members of the team.
  • The position will involve recombinant expression and purification of viral glycoproteins in mammalian cells with biochemical/biophysical characterization (using biolayer interferometry, ELISA, pull downs, electron microscopy) and serological evaluation of infection/vaccine-elicited antibodies using ELISA.
  • The position requires a high level of organization, working independently and being a team-player, ensuring clear communication with other members of the team and real-time reporting of data.
