About The Position

SAFS has an outstanding opportunity for Research Scientist/Engineer Assistant to join their team. About this Opportunity This position supports the collection, analysis, and interpretation of fish diet data to characterize trophic interactions and predator–prey dynamics within marine ecosystems. The work contributes to the development of comprehensive food habits datasets and the application of these data to estimate predation impacts on commercially important species. Through integration of field sampling, laboratory analysis, and data management, this role helps provide the scientific foundation necessary for informed fisheries management decisions and improved understanding of ecosystem structure and function.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology, Fisheries, Zoology, Ecology, Biology or related field and less than one year of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education/experience.
  • Experience with taxonomic identification of aquatic taxa.
  • Knowledge of data management practices, taxonomic identification of N. Pacific taxa, ability to follow lab safety guidelines

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Microsoft Suite, Excel/Spreadsheets.
  • > 1 year experience in taxonomically identification of stomach contents of marine fish or related relevant experience

Responsibilities

  • Taxonomically identify stomach contents of marine fish and entry of stomach data via an online computer form. – 55%
  • Participate in research cruises. – 10%
  • Maintain records and quality control of food habits collections and laboratory analysis. – 10%
  • Assist in report preparation of research results. – 5%
  • Maintain and update prey specimen collection. – 5%
  • Develop new keys and identification methods. – 5%
  • Investigate new technologies for food habits research. - 5%
  • Assist project leader with collection of literature relevant to fish physiology, collection of field samples. – 5%
