About The Position

Duke University School of Medicine is seeking a Research Scholar for a fellowship opportunity within the Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI) in the Musculoskeletal and Surgical Sciences (MASS) therapeutic area. This position is under the direction of Steven George PT, PhD, FAPTA, and is designed for individuals who are passionate about clinical research aimed at improving patient outcomes in the musculoskeletal and surgical sciences. The DCRI MASS team comprises faculty members with diverse expertise, including physical therapy, chiropractic, urology, epidemiology, orthopaedic surgery, general surgery, emergency medicine, and transplant surgery. As a Research Scholar, you will engage in various research activities, including implementation science, pragmatic clinical trials, care pathway design and evaluation, secondary analyses, patient registries, quality improvement programs, real-world evidence, patient-reported outcomes, and biomarker data collection and analysis. While the majority of your time will be dedicated to research, you will also collaborate with the team on day-to-day oversight activities and participate in educational conferences and seminars. The successful candidate will have experience aligned with the MASS faculty's expertise and the potential to develop their own line of research. Responsibilities will include collecting and analyzing data in a collaborative environment, preparing manuscripts for publication, attending seminars and lectures provided by the DCRI, and presenting at scientific conferences. You may also work closely with leadership at Duke Health to implement interventions and care pathways aimed at improving patient outcomes in clinical areas relevant to MASS faculty expertise. Compliance with good scholarly and research practices is essential, including open discussions with mentors regarding all aspects of research activities, adherence to professional conduct policies, and compliance with all applicable university and departmental policies. The Research Scholar Appointee must hold a PhD or equivalent degree, with candidates possessing both research and clinical doctorates preferred. This two-year training fellowship is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career and is not part of a clinical training program unless research training under a senior mentor is the primary focus of the appointment.
