About The Position

The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics. In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state. Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Project Manager for the Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences within the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. The Rutgers University Center for Ocean Observing Leadership (RUCOOL) is a large, field-going research group conducting global oceanographic research using novel autonomous technologies supported by sea-going vessels. These technologies generate extensive environmental data sets used to produce both theoretical insights and applied data products. The Research Project Manager collaborates with the Directors of RUCOOL and the Rutgers University Marine Field Station (RUMFS) to manage cross-functional research teams and multiple projects

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Oceanography or a related field and a minimum of three years of relevant experience that demonstrates comprehensive knowledge and understanding of general oceanography research principles and practices.
  • Excellent communication skills and computer literacy.
  • Programming skills (R, Matlab, Python, and/or GIS).
  • Ability to exhibit understanding of the plans for offshore resource development (e.g., wind, fisheries, dredging) and potential impacts to fish and fisheries (e.g. attendance at recent offshore wind planning meetings in NJ/NY).
  • Experience/knowledge of oceanographic surveys, active and passive acoustic surveys, trawl surveys, and telemetry.

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of ten years of relevant professional research experience in oceanography or related fields.
  • Demonstrated expertise in handling streaming data, data analysis and visualization, and the application of data technologies in support of scientific research.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with proven ability to convey complex scientific information to diverse audiences.
  • Strong computer literacy, including experience with relevant software, data systems, and research platforms.
  • Experience supporting large-scale field expeditions and/or oceanographic research cruises.
  • Familiarity with the development and/or authorship of fisheries and oceanographic monitoring plans for offshore projects.
  • Management training and/or professional certifications that demonstrate leadership and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develops project charters, budgets, and salary forecasts.
  • Administers team surveys and retrospectives.
  • Prepares annual reports highlighting research outcomes and impacts.
  • Ensures projects remain on schedule, meet compliance standards, and maintain clear communication across diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Contributes directly to scientific research, including securing contracts for sponsored research, analyzing large environmental datasets, producing technical reports and publications, and presenting findings at conferences and workshops.
