The Research Programmer Analyst for Cardiovascular at Advocate Health is responsible for assisting with defining functional requirements, formulating technical specifications, and researching and evaluating alternatives for moderately complex custom applications and processes that support cardiovascular research. The role involves designing, developing, and delivering ad hoc data requests for individual research initiatives, consulting with investigators, and producing data documentation. The analyst will also develop, test, and debug complex SQL and programming code to deliver analysis-ready datasets, ensuring compliance with HIPAA and other standards. The position emphasizes collaboration, efficiency, and standardization within the department.

  • Assists with defining functional requirements and formulating technical specifications for custom applications supporting cardiovascular research.
  • Designs, develops, and delivers ad hoc data requests for research initiatives and studies.
  • Consults with investigators to gather requirements and produce effort estimates.
  • Produces data dictionaries and related documentation for each data request.
  • Develops, tests, and debugs complex SQL and moderately complex R, Python, or SAS code.
  • Documents processes and rationales with code, providing data dictionaries and descriptive statistics.
  • Works with senior programmers to develop stub methods and functions for internal libraries.
  • Ensures datasets are accessible and compliant with HIPAA and other standards.
  • Contributes to documentation, code repositories, and internal packages to improve collaboration and efficiency.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • Typically requires 4 years of experience in data management, data manipulation, data extraction, and/or report writing.
  • Knowledge of data integration, data warehouse design, and management of enterprise data warehouse systems.
  • Proficient in SQL and understanding of database-specific procedural languages (e.g., PL/SQL, T-SQL).
  • Proficient in statistically oriented programming languages (e.g., R, Python, SAS) or Java.
  • Basic understanding of health care data, processes, workflows, and research methodology.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA patient confidentiality and privacy regulations.
  • Ability to explain technical subjects to non-technical clients.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team and balance multiple priorities.
  • Knowledge of cardiovascular research preferred.
