The Research Manager will lead multiple research verticals focused on the extraction, normalization and ingestion of civic data. This person would join a team working to build an unparalleled database on U.S. government officeholders, candidates and places. Civitech is a remote-first company hiring within our current footprint of 24 states (AK, CA, CO, DC, DE, FL, HI, IL, MA, MD, MN, ND, NH, NJ, NV, NY, OH, SD, TN, TX, VA, WA, WI, WY); Civitech does have an office in Austin, TX.   • Research and QA: Drive fast-paced, complex research projects through thoughtful planning, organization and delegation
  • Design and lead training on quality assurance (QA) processes
  • Identify inefficiencies in research workflows and implement process improvements
  • Use tools like SQL, web scrapers, internal data platforms and Google Sheets to extract, clean, and upload data
  • Troubleshoot data issues, resolve flags, and share learnings to enhance data quality and the end user experience
  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Regularly propose and surface process improvement ideas in relation to existing data collection in the form of user stories and acceptance criteria to communicate effectively with data and engineering
  • Proactively communicate about long term needs from the research teams as it relates to research needs, deadlines, capacity and scope of coverage
  • Own collaborative relationships with other teams including Product, Sales etc.
  • Work with Product teams to create more effective and increasingly automated tools to conduct research
  • Contribute to the process of scoping requirements, developing new features and providing feedback on designs
  • Project Ownership Be fully responsible for several major research verticals (i.e. candidate research, office holders, early voting etc.) and direct work on these projects to multiple team members
  • Be accountable for multiple research projects through direct reports; provide operational support as needed
  • Independently develop project checkpoints, milestones, and dashboards for assessing and communicating progress to the broader team
  • Proactively communicate progress towards major deadlines; uphold high standards of data quality, accuracy and robustness
  • Translate complex processes into user-friendly, step-by-step guides or trainings
  • Scope out new research projects, while considering variables such as timeline, scope, staffing etc.
  • Management and Leadership Responsibilities Foster a culture of feedback and continuous improvement within the research team and wider contract researcher community
  • Provide specific, constructive feedback to colleague(s) when work is not yet meeting expectations
  • Offer strategic talent recommendations based on researcher performance; Train junior members of the team in translating a complex process into a user-friendly, step- by-step guide
  • Help shape a positive, motivated, and entrepreneurial team culture
  • Manage, mentor or supervise several junior team members
  • Ensure that various teamwide administrative responsibilities including researcher payment, staffing, goal-setting and capacity planning are completed effectively
  • 5-8 years of professional experience in project management including experience managing others
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with SQL
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent time management skills
  • Experience maintaining complex datasets and familiarity with novel ETL processes
  • Committed to leveraging technology and data products to increase civic participation
  • Experience working with political data
  • Proficiency with GIS
  • Experience designing or maintaining ETL pipelines for data collection and processing
