The Research Lab Tech Senior/Intermediate position at the University of Michigan involves providing research support in a Neuroscience laboratory focused on the neurobiological substrates of learning and memory using genetically engineered mice. The role encompasses a variety of technical and administrative tasks, including the maintenance and breeding of transgenic mouse colonies, sample collection, and data analysis, while ensuring a clean and functional laboratory environment.

  • Perform technical, administrative, and general laboratory functions.
  • Coordinate maintenance, breeding, and genotyping of transgenic mouse colonies.
  • Collect mouse tissue samples and isolate DNA from mouse tissues.
  • Analyze DNA by PCR and perform routine molecular biology techniques.
  • Order and maintain lab supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Unpack received orders and arrange returns of damaged or incorrect orders.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and functional laboratory environment.
  • Enter data into computer systems in Excel or other database formats.
  • Assist the Principal Investigator (PI) in preparing reports, abstracts, and publications of data.
  • Train and supervise undergraduate work study students.
  • Bachelor's degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, neuroscience, or a related biological science for Senior level with 1-2 years of experience.
  • High School Diploma or Associate Degree for Intermediate level with 1-3 years of experience; Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Experience working in a research setting with transgenic mice.
  • Familiarity with routine molecular biology techniques, including RNA isolation and RT-PCR.
  • Experience with biochemical techniques such as protein purification, Western blotting, and immunohistochemistry.
  • Proficiency in common computer programs including Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, LaserGene, and Graphpad Prism.
  • Enthusiasm and inquisitiveness in learning new techniques, particularly behavioral analysis of mice.
  • Good organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
