Location Simpson Querrey Biomedical Research Center Job Description The Laronda Lab is seeking an enthusiastic, Research Lab Manager who is highly motivated to contribute to innovative fertility and hormone restoration research. This position is at the Stanley Manne Children's Research Institute and Northwestern University. We are a collaborative lab that aims to understand human gonadal sex determination and how the microenvironment influences folliculogenesis using human specimens, animal models, and iPSC lines. Candidates must have significant research technologist experience in basic bench research, a track record of supporting publications and projects and be willing to manage other research technologists. The Manager of Research Laboratory provides daily operational oversight and support to the research laboratory. Responsible for developing, implementing, maintaining and monitoring policies and procedures for this laboratory. Participates in planning experiments and evaluating/interpreting test results utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory protocols, procedures and practices. Maintains excellent public relations for all laboratory services. Assigns work and supervises lab personnel and reviews technical operations ensuring that all processes, protocols and procedures are quality controlled and functioning up to standards. Develops, implements and administers budgets, grant and administrative procedures. Co-authors scientific papers for presentation and publication and coordinates writing, submission and administration of grants.

Requirements

  • Broad knowledge of laboratory research skills usually acquired through full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a scientific major or related or appropriate combination of education and experience and at least 6 years of lab/bench or other relevant experience.
  • Proven leadership qualities with at least 3 years of supervisory experience.
  • Proven ability to develop effective systems.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and with different personalities and educational levels.
  • Able to handle a variety of responsibilities simultaneously and without constant direction.
  • Possess an excellent command of the English language; medical and scientific terminology is required.
  • Working knowledge and frequent utilization of common word processing, data management, and graphics software packages.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements policies and procedures for the research laboratory.
  • Provides direct supervision and support for laboratory staff, maintains adequate staffing levels and manages technical operations of the laboratory.
  • Helps grant applications and serves as the contact person for the funded grants.
  • Maintains accurate and timely laboratory budgets and financial reports.
  • Places and keeps track of all the purchasing orders.
  • Maintains the database of research regents, drugs and chemicals.
  • Assures effective communication with physicians, reference labs, and other staff members regarding specimen collection, documentation, scheduling, etc.
  • Participates in planning experiments and coordinates the laboratory team efforts.
  • Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, electronic mail, World Wide Web, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or test reports.
  • Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens.
  • Complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace.
