Nemours is seeking a Research Intern in the Biomedical Research, Innovation and Translation Therapies (BRITE) Lab. The Biomedical Research, Innovation, and Translation in Extracorporeal Therapies (BRITE) Lab at Nemours Children’s Hospital is a multidisciplinary team that combines clinical medicine and bioengineering to develop technologies to improve the outcomes for pediatric patients on extracorporeal life support (ECLS). We are developing next generation microfluidic oxygenators based on breakthrough semiconductor silicon membrane technology. In addition, we seek to understand the mechanisms of lung recovery while on ECLS. For more information about our work, visit our website: www.blauveltlab.com [http://www.blauveltlab.com] The Research Intern’s primary function is to provide laboratory technical assistance to support the goals and objectives of the lab. The ideal candidate will have an interest and background in bioengineering, chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field. His or her principal responsibilities will be to carry out design, assembly, and testing of microfluidic oxygenators. He or she will also be expected to contribute to the design of experiments, development of protocols, and manuscript/grant writing. Candidates will ideally be able to commit to 12-16 months of full-time work in the lab with an option to extend to additional years, if desired. This position is particularly well-suited for recent college graduates who are looking for a “gap year” position prior to entering medical school or graduate school. In addition to having the opportunity to meaningfully contribute to academic research, for those interested, there will be opportunities to gain clinical experience by shadowing Dr. Blauvelt in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at Nemours Children’s Hospital.
